The Santa and Grinch schedule has been updated and new appointments are available. Please book only 1 appointment as we are trying to fit in as many people as possible. If you have a Santa appointment but would prefer a Grinch appointment then go ahead and book the Grinch appointment but be sure to cancel your Santa visit to make it available for someone else. We will be going through the appointment list and asking those with multiple appointments to choose one. We are still interested in sponsors for anyone willing to participate. https://10and10gardencentre.simplybook.it/v2/

Mark your calendars we have some big things planned for you this upcoming weekend at 10 & 10, starting with GREEN FRIDAY this Friday, Nov. 27! Yes, we know this day is more commonly known as Black Friday, but Green Friday is a thing, too! Green Friday is all about championing sustainability and recognizing that, while Black Friday may be profitable for a lot of big retailers, it’s not always profitable for the planet. ... That’s why this Friday, we’re not doing a crazy Black Friday sale. Instead, what we ARE doing is offering our customers 15% off all indoor plants (including pointsettias) when they make a donation of any size to the Nature Conservancy of Canada / Conservation de la nature Canada at checkout. It’s our small way of helping you green up your home while helping to green up the planet at the same time. PLUS, this Saturday and Sunday, we’ll be officially kicking off the holiday season at 10 & 10, with a fully decorated store, photos with Santa, complimentary apple cider and more! But more on that tomorrow stay tuned

Due to the popularity of our Santa and the Grinch events that we have planned for Christmas, we have decided to extend our schedule and even add another Grinch day. I will adjust the schedule and post another link tomorrow at noon with the new appointments available. If you already have a Santa appointment booked but would like to see the Grinch instead, go ahead and book a Grinch appointment tomorrow after 12pm but please remember to cancel your Santa appointment afterwards ...so that appointment will be available for someone else. Please only book one appointment, we are trying to fit in as many children and furry friends as possible, we will not be able to serve everyone but it's not fair to double book when so many are waiting for an appointment. The new schedule is.... Nov 28 - 12pm to 4pm Nov 29 - 12pm to 4pm Dec 5 11am to 5pm Dec 12 11am to 5pm Dec 13 11am to 5pm Dec 19 - Grinch 11am to 5pm Dec 20 Grinch 10am to 2pm Dec 20 - Santa 3pm to 6pm Between Santa, the Grinch, free Christmas trees to those in need and all the additional costs this pandemic has brought upon us, our budget for this year has gone completely down the drain. My family is determined to provide these services to our community and those in need regardless of cost to us but if any local businesses would like to sponsor our events we would be extremely grateful for the help. You will be recognized in our store and our social media presence as a sponsor and an asset to our community. We love you all, stay safe and Merry Christmas!

Hi all! Just posting another call out for paper snowflakes. We're well on our way to turning our garden centre into a winter wonderland but we need your help! For every 5 snowflakes you make, your name will be entered to win a $20 gift certificate with us! Please have them in by Friday Nov 27th

FREE CHRISTMAS TREES TO THOSE IN NEED! Trees will be arriving at the end of this month. Last year we had Christmas trees left over so we decided to offer free live trees to those in need. The response was incredible so we decided to make this a yearly tradition. A lot of people are suffering due to this pandemic and we want to help in whatever small way we can. We are also offering a 5% discount to anyone who donates previously loved ornaments and tree stands for us to prov...ide to families taking advantage of the free tree. Christmas is the season of giving and this year so many need help. Santa and the Grinch will be visiting 10 & 10 this year, their schedule will be posted by the end of the week, along with a link to make appointments. This will be a socially distanced event, no sitting on Santa's lap unfortunately. It will be free with a donation to Toys for Tots, Orangeville Food Bank or Silver Willow Farm Rescue and Sanctuary . Pictures will be taken and emailed to everyone participating.

As the days get shorter and our sunlight starts to wane, it’s the perfect time to add a calathea to your plant family! Not only do calathea have some of the most ornate foliage of any indoor plant, but they thrive in low-light (read: winter-light) settings. Fun fact: Calathea are often called prayer plants, as their leaves open and close in a prayer-like motion through the day and night in accordance with circadian rhythms a fascinating process known as nyctinasty or p...lant sleeping. Intrigued? Here’s how to keep your calathea in a perpetual state of bliss: = Calathea prefer indirect sun and can tolerate pretty much anything from low to bright light. = They enjoy moist but not wet soil, and do not like to dry out between waterings. = Calathea love warmth and humidity. If you have a humidifier, keep it nearby and use it often. If you don’t, one trick is to place your calathea over a tray of water (with some pebbles on it so the pot itself isn’t submerged). The natural evaporation of the water will help boost humidity in the surrounding air. = Calathea are non-toxic, so they’re great if you have pets or little ones around. We have a range of calathea varieties in store, so come in and have a look! We’re open Monday to Friday 9-6, Saturday 9-7 and Sunday 9-5. Note: This Saturday, we’re closing at 5 pm to get ready for our big Halloween Trick and Treats event! Check out the link in our profile for full details.

Christmas came a bit early for us at 10 & 10. Our new tractor, garlic planter, disc Harrow and cultivator arrived just over a week ago. What does this mean for our customers? It means we are planting 2 acres of garlic that will be grown entirely by us and available for purchase next fall. We will also have our own pumpkin patch for everyone to enjoy for the next harvest season. It also means I have to wake up at 5am to clear snow since we no longer need to hire a snow remov...al company. More new and exciting additions to 10 & 10 are coming very shortly. It's because of the tremendous support we have seen from our amazing customers that any of this is even possible. We love you all, stay safe.

If you visited our garden centre today or plan on visiting any day this week you'll notice things on our growing side are a bit of a mess. We do apologize but you'll have to excuse us. we realized very quickly that the 1500 hanging baskets we could grow with our new greenhouses wasn't even going to be close to enough. Our amazing irrigation guys are in all week installing drip lines for an additional 2000 baskets. This will bring us up to 3500 hanging baskets for next spring, if that doesn't meet the demand then I guess we'll just need more greenhouses ;)

Our Christmas cactuses (Christmas cacti?) are here! And while they may share a name with their more common desert cousins, Christmas cacti hail from the coastal mountains of Brazil, and require a different sort of care. Want to add one to your home for the holidays? Here’s how to keep them looking and blooming their best:... Place your Christmas cactus in a warm spot in your home where it will get plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. Water your Christmas cactus whenever the soil at the top feels dry, and be sure to discard any extra water that isn’t absorbed. Fertilize with high-potassium fertilizer every two weeks throughout the blooming season (i.e., now!) and monthly during the rest of the year. In the summertime, feel free to place your Christmas cactus outside in a nice shady spot as long as the temperature stays above 10 degrees Celsius, it will be just fine. Have more Christmas cactus questions? Come chat with us in person and check out our selection. We’re open Monday to Friday 9-6, Saturday 9-7 and Sunday 9-5.

The newest member of the 10 & 10 family continues to steal the show! As many of you know, we recently adopted Rockwell, a rooster from GLO Farm Sanctuary (check out our Oct. 4th post for the full story), and he’s been settling in great. Rockwell spends his days strolling the aisles, enjoying plenty of snacks (blueberries are his favourite) and semi-covertly following around customers (he’s just as curious about them as they are about him!). In the evenings, he makes his ...way up to his special roost in the rafters for a good night’s sleep. Thanks to everyone who’s met this sweet, handsome boy over the past few weeks and made sure he felt welcome and safe! We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we really do have the best customers here at 10 & 10. Note: We’re fortunate to have a number of great animal rescue organizations in this area, such as GLO Farm Sanctuary and Silver Willow Farm Rescue and Sanctuary check them out and please support them if you can!

The secret to a perfectly carved pumpkin? In honour of #NationalPumpkinDay, we’re sharing a few of our favourite tips for making jack-o-lantern magic! Whether you’re looking to create a pumpkin masterpiece like one of @cato_custom_creations’s above, carving your first pumpkin (like the one shown here that a young customer sent to us yesterday) or just trying to get the job done with all your fingers intact, here are some surefire tips for success: 1: Pick the right pumpki...n: Look for a pumpkin with a nice, thick stem and no soft spots. Any shape can work and sometimes, the weird-shaped ones turn out the best. Note: if you haven’t found your perfect pumpkin yet, come see us! We have a huge range of sizes, colours, varieties and shapes to choose from. 2: SAFELY preserve your pumpkin: For some reason, washing and spritzing your pumpkin with toxic cleaning products to make it last longer is the hot carving tip this year?! A better way to go: our friends at the Toronto Wildlife Centre recommend washing your scooped-out pumpkin inside and out with 1 part vinegar and 10 parts water much safer for kids, pets and wildlife in your area. 3: Work with a pattern: This is a big one! Before you bring out the knife, draw your pattern on a piece of paper or find a design you like online and print it out. Tape it to your pumpkin and use a fork to prick along the lines to mark where your cut lines should be. #gamechanger Have a great tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments! Lastly, we know 2020 has been a tough year for many in our community, so we’re inviting families in need to visit us anytime between now and Halloween to pick up a pumpkin and carving kit from our garden centre, free of charge, while quantities last.

It’s no secret that we’re BIG fans of succulents here at 10 & 10. Why? Not only do these indoor gems make a gorgeous addition to your home, but they couldn’t be easier to care for they actually thrive on a bit of neglect! That said, there are a few tricks to keeping them happy and vibrant in your home here are the big ones: Give them plenty of sun. Most succulents love it and need around six hours a day (but keep an eye on younger plants they can scorch in direct su...n). Water sparingly and let the soil dry out between waterings. You may only need to water once a week or every two weeks, or even once a month depending on the moisture and humidity in your home. No need to mist your succulent it can actually make the leaves moldy and damage the roots. Instead, if you notice the leaves gathering dust, gently wipe them with a damp cloth to keep them looking their best. Be sure to rotate your succulents: they tend to lean toward the light, so a quarter-turn here and there will help keep them in line. (Leaning might also be their way of telling you that they need a sunnier spot!) Have more questions about proper succulent care or want to check out our succulent selection? Stop by our garden centre we’re always happy to help!

So this post isn’t about succulents, but we think it’s still worth your time Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, a day to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilize support to make proper mental health care a reality for people around the globe. Here in Canada, the scope of the mental health crisis is staggering:... One in two Canadians have or have had a mental illness by the age of 40. More than 4,000 Canadians die by suicide every year 11 people every day. 75% of children with mental disorders do not have access to specialized treatment services. Opiod overdoses now account for more deaths in Canada than automobile accidents. 85% of Canadians think mental health services are the most underfunded in our health-care system. There are excellent organizations in our community doing critical work to address this crisis like CMHA Peel Dufferin, CAMH Foundation and more. If you know of others, feel free to add them in the comments. And if you’re able to, please consider donating to support their invaluable efforts. There is no health without mental health, and we all have a role to play in raising awareness, removing the stigma and advocating for change. #MentalHealthForAll #MentalHealthIsHealth #ApartButNotAlone
