Imagination is my guide. I follow it and lead it into a world largely built on my drawings. It may be in response to a real-time visual phenomenon found in my travels, or to the close-up intrigue of a busy table in the studio or kitchen. Inspiration takes an unimpeded excursion through a mix of overlapping memories and images. Ivan Kenneth Eyre, 1998 Today we’re looking at Woodland Terrace by Ivan Eyre from the AGP #PermanentCollection which is currently installed in the ...main gallery. Eyre’s art practice spans five decades and includes sculpture, drawing, print, and painting depicting imagined subjects with roots in our experienced world and are informed by psychology and his deep interest in the mind. 1: Ivan Eyre, Woodland Terrace, 1973, oil and acrylic on canvas, gift of Mr. John Cowan, 1988. 2: Detail of: Ivan Eyre, Woodland Terrace, 1973, oil and acrylic on canvas, gift of Mr. John Cowan, 1988. #AGPtbo #IvanEyre #ContemporaryArt

For this week’s #PermanentCollection post, we’re looking at the work of Kenneth Lochhead. I like to paint. As an eclectic painter I am in love with the nature of form, and human innovation. I have learned that plastic form, with its elements of colour, light, line and space, is the essence of coherent visual expression. I suppose my painting is based primarily on the art of painting with the hope that it transcends to the art in painting. I like to think that there are no r...ules, just meaningful principles that free imaginative pursuits through painting. Kenneth Lochhead, University of Regina Archives #FunFact: This work was originally a birthday gift to fellow artist and friend, Ronald Bloore. He signed it with the following: The mystery of life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced. Happy Birthday Ron. Love Ken & Joanne. May 29, 1975." This work is currently on view in the exhibit: Speaking Through, works from the Permanent Collection, until October 4th, 2020. Don’t miss it -- give us a call and book your visit! [I]mages are entangled with thingness. They are ubiquitous, inherently reflexive, and evasive. Images are not only representations or appearances, but also objects that contain surface, substance, and memory. - Sasha Opeiko, Artist Talk, January 19, 2020 This is your last chance to see 217 by Sasha Opeiko at the AGP. The exhibition includes a series of graphite drawings and 3D printed objects based on images sourced from an article outlining the initial investigations of se...ction 217 in the 4th block of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which contains a large, highly radioactive mass of melted matter, formed following the nuclear meltdown in 1986 and referred to as the Elephant’s Foot. It’s also the last week to check out our other exhibitions on the upper ramps including locked in a way by Matthew Hayes and Victoria Mohr-Blakeney and Speaking Through: works from the Permanent Collection. This week we’re featuring the work of Shaan Syed from our #PermanentCollection This recently acquired piece is on view for the first time at the AGP as part of the exhibition: Offering, works from the Permanent Collection. The shape bridges the abstract and representational, it can be read as waves or mountains thereby connecting it to landscape and that tradition within representational painting. Dragging the thick oil paint across the surface of the painting with a lar...ge brush in one direction was a way of both accentuating the surface and also negating the expectation of the painting acting as a window. I saw this action as a form of cancelling out any image or scene from happening, reiterating a modernist idea that painting is simply material added to a surface. The polyfilla swipes that became a part of these paintings were a further cancelling out. Using a material that is supposed to ‘fill in’, I was intrigued also by the meeting of the seductive oil paint and the more utilitarian and ‘dead’ material of polyfilla. The forms the swipes took were like animated gestures that reiterated the flatness of the painting surface and echoed the movements the limbs of a body can make in the manner of a semaphore giving signs or signals. The monochrome part of the paintings I saw as ‘stage legs’ - a term used in stage design to describe a fictionalized painted scene that is wheeled on and off stage as a backdrop to a scene. For this week’s #PermanentCollection post we’re sharing the work of Sanaz Mazinani Mazinani is an Iranian Canadian multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in San Francisco and Toronto. Sanaz Mazinani’s Conference of the Birds series uses images of the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street protests to propose new networks of cultural coexistence. By literally placing images of these two distinct movements next to one another, and digitally recombining them into... patterns that entwine, Mazinani explains, I have bound the people in these movements together. To me these patterned works become a symbol for the global relationships between the public. Repetition and reproducibility empowers images with the ability to construct and define history. With this work I aim to use the semiotics of pattern to reflect upon the possibilities of coexistence in a globalized world. For more, check out her website at: https://www.sanazmazinani.com/conference-of-the-birds You can see these three works in our current main gallery Exhibition: Offering: works from the Permanent Collection. These images show the work along with a detail on the right. Come check them out in person and book your visit! See you at the Gallery #AGPtbo #DigitalCollage #SanazMazinani #ContemporaryArt
