Do you recognize this plant? It’s called Spotted Knapweed, and it is an invasive plant commonly found in the Elk Valley. Large infestations of Knapweed can degr...ade the soil, increasing erosion and surface runoff, and can outcompete native plants, reducing biodiversity and forage for wild animals. Spotted knapweed is a biennial plant that forms a rosette in its first year or growth, and then grows leafy stems in its second year of growth. You can recognize Spotted Knapweed by its basal, deeply divided leaves that look similar to arugula, and the egg-shaped, spotted flower head that, when open, reveals a bright purple or pink flower. We encourage people to control Spotted Knapweed by pulling out the plant, ideally removing as much of the taproot as possible and trying to remove the flowers before they go to seed. If you have a larger infestation, mowing the plant several times a year can keep it in check, but you will need to mow before the plants go to seed and you will not be able to fully eradicate the plants. Once removed, spotted knapweed should be thrown away with household waste and not composted as you may inadvertently spread seeds this way. If you happen to see Spotted Knapweed on public lands, you can also report it using the Report-A-Weed app on your phone! Every Wednesday this September we will provide a Weedy Wednesday post to help bring some attention to the invasive plants we battle here in the Elk Valley. A great way to protect our local ecology is to monitor what’s growing in our yards and not contribute to the spread of invasive plants.
