Year in Review Over the last 12 months, Much activity has occured for the Lincoln & Welland Regiment. With COVID-19, The Regiment had a very interesting year w...ith many challenges to be faced. With Steadfast Resolve, The Regiment overcame the challenge and answered the call to action. In April 2020, The Regiment saw its first members deployed in support of OPERATION LASER and the Canadian Armed Forces operation for the COVID-19 pandemic. When OPERATION LASER transitioned to a return to training in June 2020, The regiment provided both candidates as well as instructional staff to support 32 Canadian Brigade Group Battle School With Master Corporal Hoeller, Master Corporal Langelaan and Master Corporal Rozon off to Meaford to teach Infantry DP1.1 and Lieutenant Yeandle, Sergeant Scotney, Sergeant Neufeld, Master Corporal Comfort, Master Corporal McIntyre and more to support a local Infantry DP1.1 aswell. In September and October of 2020, The Regiment continues on with training with members conducting multiple ranges to qualify with the C7A2 Rifle. On 31 October 2020, The Regiment conducted a Change Of Command Ceramony with Lieutenant Colonel Cincio passing on the role of Commanding Officer to Lieutenant Colonel Canavan. In November 2020, the Regiment Carried on with training. During Remembrance Day, The Regiment payed respects to the fallen at local cenotaphs while abiding by COVID-19 restrictions. November also left the Regiment missing a familiar face in the building as Sergeant Scotney had retired. Sergeant Scotney has left a postive impression on every member of the regiment, from Private to even the Commanding Officer. We thank Sergeant Scotney for his decades of faithfull service to the Regiment. As the year comes to an end, We would like to thank all members of the regiment for their hard work, resolve and continuation of strong support for the Regiment as well as the regimental family and we look forward to continuing on in 2021 NON NOBIS SED PATRIÆ Photo 1: Private Davidson takes aim at the target during a section attack - November 2020 Photo 2: Master Corporals Langelaan, Rozon, Hoeller and Comfort with 4 Graduates of Basic Military Qualification in Borden Ontario, August 2020. EIGHTY- ONE YEARS AGO TODAY THE TSR (M.G.) ONBOARD THE EMPRESS OF AUSTRALIA DEPARTED HALIFAX BOUND FOR SCOTLAND IL Y A 80 ET UN AN AUJOURD'HUI LE TSR (M.G.)... À BORD DE L 'EMPRESS OF AUSTRALIA DÉPARTE HALIFAX EN LIEN AVEC L'ÉCOSSE The Regiment arrived in Halifax on 7 December after a two-day train trip from Toronto and at once began to embark on Troopship E-5, the Canadian Pacific Liner, RMS Empress of Australia, still in its peacetime configuration, at Pier 21 in Halifax. The Regiment had brought an extra Vickers machine gun along with it, surplus to its inventory, which was a little unusual, until one looked more closely at the paperwork. Private Corky, an Airedale terrier and Regiment’s mascot was listed as the Vickers. The TSR (M.G.) (738 all ranks) was the first regiment to leave the Toronto garrison for overseas and one of the very first in the country to depart Canada after war was declared on 10 September 1939. One week earlier, Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Thompson was given the go ahead to mobilize. Over 80% of the TSR (M.G.) officers and soldiers volunteered to go active. Along with the Empress of Australia, four other liners, Empress of Britain Monarch of Bermuda Duchess of Bedford and the Aquitania carried the first contingent totalling some 7400 all ranks. After three days of loading stores, troops and more waiting, the convoy was ready to move and it slowly slipped out of Halifax harbour on 10 December. The accompanying warships were HMS Resolution, HMS Repulse, HMS Emerald, HMS Furious and six RCN destroyers. For 43 years, (1928-1971) Pier 21 was the east coast terminus for troopships carrying soldiers overseas and back home and ocean liners bringing immigrants to Canada. By the 1970s with airplanes the preferred way to travel, Pier 21 traffic dropped significantly, and it was closed. In 1997, it was declared a National Historic Site and in time an Immigration Museum was created. In 2005, during a visit to Pier 21, it was learned that the museum had a fund-raising initiative whereby regiments which had embarked from here for overseas could have a commemorative plaque placed on the boat deck. The suggestion was passed forward to the regimental senate and after a donation of $1000 to support the museum, a TSR (M.G.) plaque was placed. The text was ours to write, but the size and design fell under the purview of the museum.

Reconnaissance patrols are teams of soldiers gathering crucial information regarding a battlespace to assist a commander in defining and shaping the battlespace... in which they operate. Patrols during times of war and conflict may look for information about locations, markings, or movements of the enemy, among many other pieces of intelligence that provide their commander with the information needed to make decisions or plans. The health and safety of our soldiers is crucial to our force remaining #StrongProudReady. The soldiers shown here training to conduct recce patrols have been isolating together at 4th Canadian Division Training Centre for the duration of their course. Staying fit and maintaining operational readiness is a priority in the Canadian Armed Forces. Every year, members must pass the FORCE Evaluation. The FORCE Eval...uation is a reflection of the CAF minimal physical employment standard related to common defence and security duties known as the Universality of Service principle. Some trades within the CAF require higher levels of fitness or operational readiness, but the minimum standards for the FORCE Evaluation are meant to reflect the baseline CAF physical employment standard that everyone must meet. The FORCE Evaluation is designed to capture the movement patterns, energy systems, and muscle groups recruited in the performance of the Common Military Task Fitness Evaluation (CMTFE). For more information on what to expect on the FORCE Evaluation, click on the link in our Instagram profile bio. SIKHS IN THE CANADIAN CORPS DURING THE GREAT WAR LASHMAN (LAAL) SINGH AND HARI SINGH 75th BATTALION (Canadian Expeditionary Force) Lashman Singh was Killed-in...-Action 102 years ago today. Of the over 600,000 soldiers who served in the Canadian Army in the Great War, only 10 were Sikhs and two of that number served with the 75th Battalion. No. 219222, Private Lashman (Laal) Singh was one of the two, the other being No. 139181, Private Hari Singh, both from the Punjab, India. Hari Singh was an original 75th Battalion enlistment, Laal Singh joined up in September 1915 in Smith Falls Ontario and was taken-on-strength with the 75th overseas in July 1916. The circumstances surrounding the death of Private Laal Singh remain a bit of a mystery. It appears he was a fatality on a patrol on the outskirts of Valenciennes (Battle Honour) on the night of 24 October 1918. Following is an excerpt from Toronto’s Fighting 75th in the Great War, 1916-1919. By nightfall on the 22nd, the 75th had dug in and stretched along the west bank of the Canal de l’Escaut. The next evening, Lieutenant Henry Hanan led a four-man reconnaissance patrol over the canal to check on enemy dispositions in Valenciennes. Swimming across, they found a foot bridge on the German side which they were able to swing into place. It was a quiet and uneventful night. Twenty-four hours later, Lieutenant Hanan led a second patrol of 14 men over the foot bridge and penetrated the railway yards directly east and south of the canal. As he motioned his patrol forward in the dark, he was challenged and immediately fired on by machine-gun and rifles at 40 metres distant. Private Laal Singh 33 was killed; everyone else scattered. Hanan and six others made it back to the footbridge: the remainder were not able and attempted to swim the canal to safety. The Germans had strewn barbed wire along areas of the canal bed, and now threw potato mashers (grenades) into the water, with the result that only two arrived safely back, one badly wounded. Of the others, Lance/Sergeant David McConachie, 28, William McArthur, 26; George Derochie, 22; John MacPherson, 25; and Samuel Sauvé, 25; could not have known about the barbed wire and it is presumed that they became entangled and subsequently drowned. So of the seven not able to make it to the footbridge, five drown and only two made it safely across, one seriously wounded. The date-of-death for the five is 25 October. Only Private Singh is recorded as being killed on the 24th. Although not known with absolute certainty, in all probability he was killed in the firefight as he was the only one recorded to have died on the 24th. In the video Canadian Sikh Soldiers in World War I uploaded here, reference is made to Laal Singh’s death and that he was not killed as indicated. The Battalion War Diary has no mention of the 75th being involved in any other activity that night, thus, he had to have been killed on this patrol. (Start at the 32 minute mark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mswi99wZOR4 Circumstances of Death Cards exist in Library/Archives Canada for Great War fatalities, however records from alpha Sims to Z have not survived, so we are unable to confirm the exact details. Private Laal Singh was originally buried in Bellaing Churchyard about 5 kilometres from where he was killed and later moved to Arras Road British War Cemetery for final burial. On his gravestone is the standard cross, most likely because he attested as Church of England and therefore considered Christian. Private Hari Singh, and original 75th volunteer was wounded at Vimy, survived the war and joined the newly formed Toronto Scottish in 1921. Now a sergeant, he was still on strength in 1939 when Queen Elizabeth presented new Colours to the Regiment. He passed away in April 1953.

ICYMI -- On Friday, several distinguished guests presented a plaque honoring the Queen’s Rangers unveiling it at its new home in York County’s Riverwalk Landing.... The Queen’s Rangers, a Loyalist regiment formed in 1776, served during the 1781 Siege of Yorktown and was part of the British surrender. Following the war, many of the Rangers relocated to Canada. Although part of Lord Cornwallis’ Army in Virginia, the Queen’s Rangers are remembered for their impact on the American Revolution. This plaque, presented to the United States by the Ontario Heritage Trust, honors the 200th anniversary of the Siege of Yorktown on October 19th, 1981. For several years, the plaque was in storage, but has now been reinstalled in Yorktown. Do you want to read more? Click this link: https://www.act.nato.int//plaque-rededication-recognizing-
