Doesn't everyone at some point? Some people are lucky enough to be related to a handy person or have an awesome neighbour who is happy to help them out. I think it's more situational, some people have the skills but not the time. Others may have the time but don't have the skills (or YouTube is failing them )... We find that it is usually people who are.... Listing their house to sell, and they have a list of items that need to be done before the listing pictures are taken and showing appointments start. The real estate market is INTENSE right now. Moving into a new home and need pictures hung, furniture assembled, feature walls built or painted. You know, the things that make a house feel like a home. In need of help at their place of work (office, daycare, medical office, restaurant etc) needs some things taken care of and need a reputable company that ticks all the boxes to come in. Are on a strata council, work for a property management company or have an investment property, and need a company that they can call on for anything, who show up when they say they are going to. Are anyone with a list of things to be done for a multitude of reasons. They aren't sure how. Don't have the time. Don't have the tools. Are tired of waiting for their neighbor/significant other/sibling/child to have time to do it, and just want it taken care of. Maybe some people call it an anniversary, but I think that birthday just sounds a bit happier. Although we are just starting our 4th year of business, I can say that the past few years has taught me more about business and life than I expected. I am not an expert and still learn every day, but I thought I would throw down some of the things I have learned. They (I'm still not sure who they are) say that it takes a village to raise kids. It also takes a village to start a... business. Surround yourself with people who will always tell you the truth. Those who offer you solid advice, listen to you vent, laugh when you text them a great idea at 3am, and call you out on your bullshit. It may take time to put together your team. You may hire a few who aren't a goodfit. Sometimes this may be an understatement. But when you find the right people you will know. Your team is everything, they will become your extended family and part of your village. Your spouse/family/friends may question your sanity at some point. You may also question it. The people closest to you may not always understand what is going on, but they are always there to offer support. For me, these are the people who pick up my kids when I am running late, or drop off wine on my porch when they can just tell that things aren't going smoothly. It's okay to not know what you are doing, or just old school wing it. You are going to need a plan A, B, C, D. Even the best laid plans can get thrown out the window. Remember the time when none of us knew that a global pandemic was coming and we all thought 2020 was our year. Ya, that was fun. Mistakes happen. Don't beat yourself up. One day you will look back at some of the things that happened and laugh. It may take some time but you will get there. Or that's what they tell me. Clients are everything. Most are absolutely amazing, some will drive you to drink. Your village just may be built by clients who became friends. It's hard. Like really hard. Sometimes lay on the floor and cry hard. But it will be worth it. I promise you it will be worth it.

I know, not everyone is ready for the dreaded W word. But here we are. It was CHILLY when I walked my kids to school this morning. Whether we like it or not, winter is right around the corner, and so we put together a little checklist of things you can do to get your house winter ready.... Check your fences, railings and steps. Is everything safe and secure? Gutters and downspouts, is water going where it should be, or is it detouring somewhere you don't want it to? Be rodent aware!Are there any spaces or cracks where a rodent can sneak through to stay warm for the winter? October is fire safety month. Are your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in good working order? Change your furnace filters. Efficiency is key! Weatherstripping! Do you feel a draft under your door or doors, maybe it's time to seal that up. Do your windows and doors need some caulking to help keep the heat in and water out? Sump pumps, time to do a maintenance check, because it's one of those things you rarely think about until disaster strikes. Drain your hose bibs. Water is ruthless! Check your roof.Do you see any missing shingles, flashing or vents? You don't want to wait until there is snow sitting on your roof to realize you have an issue. Are you ready for snow? We all know that when it snows it sends the lower mainland into a tailspin and shovels are the hottest commodity in stores.

Word on the street is that today is World Entrepreneurs' Day. This is me circa early 2018, this was the first van we bought and we were in our second month of business. I was excited AF. The first year of business was tough. Like really tough. I'm sure all business owners can agree. There were tears and moments of sheer panic. But there were also some amazingly huge wins. Some things that I will remember for the rest of my life. I am pretty sure that I got through it b...y the skin of my teeth and a few safety nets. #tonytotherescue Then 2020 came along. I turned 40 on our second anniversary at the beginning of this year. Looking back maybe I should have seen that as a bad omen. Sailing into our 3rd year of business I thought for sure things would be a bit easier, a bit smoother, and maybe even a little bit more fun. Boy, was I wrong. Juggling running a business with homeschooling 2 small kids, and everything else that life threw our way, it tested me. There were days that I was super mom, days that I was super boss but there were also days where I just laid on the floor. Scared. Worried. Trying to find my brave face for everyone around me. But I found it, put it back on and kept on going. That's what you do as an #entrepreneur, you keep on going. Being an #entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Being an #entrepreneur through a pandemic, well that's just crazy. But my fellow small business owners, I have to give a HUGE shout out to them. The network of people I have met, done business with, had a beer with, I look up to you. Thank you for your help, your sage advice, the beers that I made you have with me even when you probably didn't have time. I wouldn't be here without you. I wouldn't want to be here without you. So cheers to all my small business friends, I wish you huge success, to find and hold onto your magic and maybe even have a vacation where you don't have to work.
