It's NACHOS DAY today. Nothing against them, I'm just more of a chips n' dip guy...but I know some of you are pretty passionate about your Nachos. So, let's see em, and perhaps show me the error of my ways?! ~Evan
Western Forest Products announced their third quarter results this week, showing big gains in log and lumber profits. Pandemic projects have led to record high lumber prices of almost $1300 per thousand board feet. Western rebuilt their post-strike log inventory and restarted production at the Ladysmith sawmill in August, but company CEO Don Demens said the Somass sawmill remains indefinitely curtailed as a result of a fibre supply deficit, tenure takebacks, and the US Softwo...od Lumber dispute. Net income of $11.5 million was reported for the third quarter of 2020, as compared to net loss of $18.7 million for the third quarter of 2019 and net income of $8.5 million in the second quarter of 2020. The restarting of Ladysmith, the Cowichan Bay Planer and Alberni Pacific Planer operations allowed the company to increase lumber shipments by 10% over the last quarter. https://www.westernforest.com/investors/
A local case that gained International attention came to a quiet close yesterday. 32-year old Brandon Johnson was charged with child luring after sending repeated graphic invitations for sex to a 13-year old girl. Her mother saw the texts, and after alerting police, arranged a creep-catcher-styled vigilante arrest, and along with two men, beat Johnson with a baseball bat, puncturing a lung and hospitalizing him for a week in March 2018.... Crown Counsel Paul Pearson said the case took this long to come to court because they had to get the Instagram messages from the central server in California after posts had been deleted. Johnson pled guilty and apologized to the victim, her family, the community and the court yesterday, before receiving a sentence of 18 months in jail. Outside the court, the victim's mother said she was satisfied with the sentence "I think that the Crown asked for everything very fairly and I was very happy that the judge agreed with him, and we're setting a higher precedent for our children," she said. The mother and two men who beat Johnson all received conditional sentences in January 2019, and after a year without issues were cleared of any criminal records. In sentencing, Judge Brian Harvey said Johnson would have been sentenced for 2 years except for the beating. Johnson will be on probation for two years after his release.
What's a bad gift you've received? Or did you ever give a gift knowing it was a poor choice? I was given a plant - after specifically saying don't ever give me plants! I suck at taking care of them ~Megan
Since we're unable to be at (or even have) events due to Covid-19, we had some Sun-Rype products left over that we usually hand out on location. Today, we were able to donate them to the ADSS Breakfast Club Big thanks to Melody of the ADSS Breakfast Club! ~Megan
The local real estate market remains hot as 45 homes sold last month, a 150% increase from the 18 sold in October of last year. That number however is a 24% drop from September when 60 homes sold, which real estate analysts blame on a lack of inventory and not any lack of interest. According to Vancouver Island Real Estate Board President Kevin Reid, demand throughout the region remains high but there aren't enough homes to satisfy it.... He said while some buyers are advancing their retirement plans, others are downsizing and reducing their debt load. Average house prices also saw a year-over-year increase, up 24% from $360 to $447-thousand. http://www.vireb.com/index.php?page=20
Your morning LOL! ~Evan
Port Alberni RCMP used a battering ram, and approached a 10th Avenue home with assault-style patrol carbine rifles yesterday morning. More than a dozen Mounties were involved in the execution of a search warrant, and arrested three people. An e-mail from police only said they were investigating criminal offenses related to the property, and did not provide specifics. ... The investigation continues and no charges have been laid yet.

Tomorrow's National Candy Day! What's your favourite candy?! ~Megan
Port Alberni RCMP were called last week to investigate possible vandalism at McLean Mill that caused the release of heavy bunker oil. According to City officials, the oil for the steam train was being stored in a rail tank car at the eastern edge of the National Historic Site, and someone unlocked and opened a valve, spilling an undetermined amount of oil in the rail siding area. Environmental consultant David Clough says the fuel spill and environmental damage is limited and... there appears to be no escape into surface waters. Crews have now removed the tank car and are pulling out the contaminated rail ties and ballast
