ABA Connections 22.04.2020

This month we will be focusing our #TuesdayTips on how to select and ensure your ABA provider is qualified, ethical and capable! One of the first things ABA Connections encourages families to research when looking for an ABA service provider is whether or not members of the clinical team are credentialed in behavior analysis. To do so, ask whether the individuals who will be supervising and monitoring programming are Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) or Board Cer...tified assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs). You may also want to inquire how long they have been certified for, what is within their scope of practice, what their caseloads look like and how often supervision of you child will occur for (HINT: It should be 20% of direct hours). Why is this important? Ensuring you and your child will be working with individuals accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) means that those individuals not only have completed coursework in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis but have also completed extensive supervised fieldwork. It also means that individuals credentialed with the BACB have an ethical code that must be followed and a regulatory body to report to, meaning you are able to file a complaint when unethical conduct has occurred. For more information on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board or the BCBA or BCaBA credentials visit www.bacb.com

Imitation is one of the most important skills for a child to master as it is considered to be a building block for future learning. This #TuesdayTip is all about promoting imitation at home! One of the best ways to help encourage imitation is through functional play which mean playing with toys in expected or conventional ways such as stacking blocks, driving a car, or putting shapes in a shape sorter! When encouraging imitation, remember these steps: Observe, Imitate, Expand, Model, Prompt and Reinforce!
