over the past while i’ve been hearing this word in my head over & over again. and not even really sure it’s a word so naturally ... i googled it: perfectionism.... perfectionism is often defined as the need to be or appear perfect, or even to believe that its possible to achieve perfection. says google. it is typically viewed as a positive trait rather than a flaw. people may use the term healthy perfectionist to describe or justify perfectionist behaviour. (anyone else like ... right now or just me??!?) as i kept on reading more, i could feel myself becoming triggered. i’ve always said to myself and others in the past.. (when i was a hair stylist especially, apologizing to clients for taking too long when i spent extra time trying to make sure every strand of hair on their head was perfect) ..i’m a perfectionist. which must be a good thing right? just means i pay attention to detail. little did i know that every time i said the words i am a perfectionist it was being imprinted in me over & over again and has now lead me into ‘perfectionism’. and this is not a good thing. double tapif any of this speaks to you perfectionism has had me feeling like everything i do isn’t good enough. like every post i try to write on social media isn’t good enough because it’s not perfect. every time i look in the mirror, i still catch myself sometimes seeing the girl i was 50lbs ago because at that moment i didn’t feel like i have a perfect body. perfectionism has brought me down for years now without my knowledge ... i had no idea this was an actual thing. perfectionism also increases your chances in developing serious mental disorders like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) eating disorders body dysmorphia social anxiety or phobia depression chronic stress all of these things can very easily be triggered living through global pandemic or better yet, the year 2020 ... but acknowledging perfectionism is the first step in overcoming it. so don’t let yourself get over worked, overwhelmed & burnt out striving for perfection. strive for progress PS.
