You are Invited to Participate in the Migrant Work in the Time of Covid-19 Research Project! We at the MWC are working with researchers at UBC to better underst...and and document the experiences of migrant and undocumented workers who are doing essential work in Canada -- in many different jobs in many different sectors. We know that the pandemic has made the lives of many migrants and undocumented workers more precarious. Canadians and the Canadian government need to know this too and respond appropriately. This research will help to do this and will support the MWC in our ongoing campaign for Amnesty for Undocumented Workers. If you are a migrant or undocumented worker, we would like to hear how the pandemic has affected your life. If you would like to know more and/or would like to participate in the research, please contact Vanessa Banta ([email protected]) or Geraldine Pratt ([email protected]). There is no need to share your actual name: the confidentiality of your name, your interview, your workplace and your work status will be strictly maintained. The interview can be an appropriately physically-distanced in-person interview or online, whichever you prefer. The interview will last approximately 1 hour and can be scheduled at a date, time, and place most convenient to you. One goal of this research is to develop a podcast, to let all Canadians know the situations of migrant and documented workers during the pandemic. Participants will be provided with an honorarium. Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you!

IRCC has announced that the 2020 Parents and Grandparents program application will be opening at noon EDT on October 13, 2020 and remain open until noon EDT on ...November 3, 2020. Canadians and permanent residents will have an opportunity to submit an interest to sponsor form online. IRCC will then randomly select potential sponsors and send an invitation to submit a sponsorship application. A total of 10,000 applications will be accepted for processing. Selected applicants will have 60 days to submit an application. Due to the financial impacts of Covid-19, IRCC will introduce a temporary policy that will reduce the income requirement for the 2020 tax year to the minimum necessary income to sponsor a parent or grandparent. The BC Government has announced that employers who wish to hire foreign nationals through three federal programs the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, the Hom...e Child-Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot must now register with the provincial government by December 15. This registration requirement allows the province to identify employers who hire TFWs, enabling inspections and the enforcement of provincial law. The registry is the final step in implementing the Temporary Foreign Worker Protection Act passed in 2018, which established a licensing requirement for recruiters of foreign workers and the employer registry.
