Technology impacts the cost of repairing a vehicle. Guess what that does to insurance premiums...
#OperationColdStart Final Day Today was the last day of Operation Cold Start. Throughout the week, officers found 566 vehicles that were at risk of being sto...len by auto thieves. Although many citizens were appreciative of the Operation Cold Start program, many of the responses our officers received from citizens were that a stolen vehicle was not a big deal to them because it is covered by insurance, that it wouldn’t happen to them, or that it’s their vehicle to do what they want with. In one instance, officers observed a citizen load his infant into the backseat of his running truck and then go back inside his house to get something else. When confronted, his response was that he wasn’t far away from his truck and he was keeping an eye on it. It takes offenders under 10 seconds to steal a vehicle that is left running and unattended. And while CPS makes efforts to prevent auto thefts, we still require the public’s help. A stolen vehicle may seem like a minor inconvenience or just another insurance claim. However, a stolen vehicle being driven by a criminal is a significant public safety concern, that puts the lives of Calgarians and our officers at risk. While the temperatures continue to drop, you can directly help to reduce the number of auto thefts in our community by simply following these tips: Never leave a running vehicle unattended, if the keys are inside the vehicle or if the vehicle has been started with a keyless ignition or push-button start. Use a remote starter whenever possible and keep your vehicle locked. Use a steering wheel lock to deter thieves. Never leave spare keys or garage door openers in or around your vehicle. Never leave children or pets in a running vehicle. Do not leave valuables, including identity documents and bank cards, in a vehicle. Report suspicious activity to police immediately by calling 403-266-1234 or 9-1-1 for crimes in progress.
#OperationColdStart Day 2 Is your vehicle safe to leave unattended if you start it with a push-button start and don’t leave the keys inside of it? No. Many p...eople think that their engine will automatically shut off if someone tries to drive away with their vehicle that they started with a push-button start. In vehicles that have engine immobilizers installed, this is true. However, in the majority of vehicles, thieves will still be able to drive your car away even if they don’t have the keys, and they will be able to continue to drive it as long as they don’t shut off the engine. If your vehicle has a keyless ignition, always stay with it as it warms up unless you have confirmed that it cannot be driven away without the key or if you have used a remote starter. Yesterday morning, one vehicle was stolen while left running with the keys inside of it outside a convenience store. The vehicle was later spotted by patrol officers in District 5. With the help of officers from the Canine Unit and covert resources from the Auto Theft Team, two women were safely taken into custody and the vehicle was recovered. The women have since been charged with possession of stolen property. Help us prevent your vehicle from being stolen, involved in high-risk criminal driving and used in the commission of other crimes that target Calgarians by following these tips: Never leave a running vehicle unattended, if the keys are inside the vehicle or if the vehicle has been started with a keyless ignition or push-button start. #YYC #WeAreCPS #YYCCrime
A good reminder:
Another reason why auto insurance is absolutely crazy right now.
