They’re the people who have the real knowledge and you are a beneficiary of their insight. - You are validated by it. It is a dream. If acting is a path, it's your vehicle for self discovery and realization. It's your path for transformation and growth. For you acting is an art. You see acting as an opportunity to deepen your understanding of what it means to be human, to be alive and in relationship with the world around you, to find your voice and your range of true self expression. - You own it. It is your path. If you find yourself falling into the trap of relating to acting as a profession or as a fan, make the adjustments; take the necessary steps to realign yourself with the art that you have taken up. Folks - we have delayed filming because of the air quality and hope to start in the next few days. But, for your information, we will continue Sleuths throughout this period of this pandemic while we are working from home - and beyond. My goal with filming Sleuths is to create an atmosphere for continued learning and development in the style that is representative of the way we work in the studio. I know that many of you are challenged by the personal work and emotions that ...come up in acting classes, and on top of that you don't have the in-person aspect to really feel the support that is around you as you do this work. The web series will give you a chance to have that support. It's our bond. Some of you may think - there is no way I can do that I am not ready to take on a role! But think of it as entering a scene study class. At the end of all of our scene study classes we would film scenes. It's very creative work. In Sleuths we get to do that x10, with more time given to filming and character development on an on-going basis. There are also opportunities to start with one-liners or reaction shots. And you know what? It's not a big deal. We can always cut you out if you suck ... so it's ok. We're doing this with humour on our side. You'll be supported on your next try. You have the ability to step into it slowly. For me, it is also the opportunity to practice more deeply the truth of what it means to work on something and to get into the *process* rather than focusing on the result. That's pretty difficult with a camera in your face. But my goal is on creating an environment where everyone will be supported and encouraged to dive in and experiment and discover the enjoyment and the truth of what Stanislavski called 'the art of experiencing'. So don't think of Sleuths as a production. This is a class. This is a means to strengthen our understanding of how to get into life and living, and who we are as an individuals. If we ignore the fact of systemic racism, if it is never addressed in our classroom, never spoken about or looked at, we will be paying no attention to something that deeply undermines the value of so many people. In another art form, that of martial arts, to learn to fight at the highest levels, there are strict rules on behaviour. Seemingly in opposition to learning to fight, comes the demand for the deepest respect for, not only your opponent, but for the place that you train. But that has to be. Even in the art of fighting, if the highest respect is not paid, the best learning cannot happen. How much more so in the art of acting? Whether it is white supremacy or any other intersection of oppression, we will openly engage those conversations so that together we develop a culture of deep respect. Actorium Online SCENE STUDY: CHARACTER Diving into embodying the title role of a character driven story. At the heart of every good story is a compelling character. It is what pulls the audience in and engages the emotions. Writing alone cannot accomplish this: the actor must find the heart of the role, create definition, and ultimately embody that character and bring them to life. In this class, you will study what to pull from the story to define your character, how to add ...to and strengthen the character’s core, and learn which choices strengthen the role and which choices will detract. This course is highly focused on the art of acting and recommended for experienced actors. Our online course focuses on the internal makeup of the character.
