There are several possible reasons why a mother's milk production may be low, and a registered acupuncturist can help identify the problem and address it with a combination of diet, lifestyle, and treatment. When we say to "breathe deeply", we really mean breathing from the abdomen and diaphragm. Whether you call it meditative breathing, or diaphragmatic breathing, or any of the several names it has. Deep, meditative breathing is great for you health! It calms your nervous system, regulating digestion, and helping with anxiety. You can also use your lungs more fully, making them stronger and giving you more energy. Your secondary respiratory muscles (which become overworked with ...upper chest breathing) can relax - very important for those with neck pain and tension or headaches. There are many different ways to practice this method of breathing, and if you're interested it's best to find someone to guide you along the way. Here's a primer for how we do it: -Breathe deeply and slowly -Inhale into the lower abdomen; see and feel your abdomen inflate like a balloon (you may feel it "inflate" in the lower back or the lower abdomen - either is ok) -Exhale naturally and slowly, by relaxing your body. It is best if your exhale is slower than your inhale. (2x slower is ideal) -Keep your mind focused on the breath. How does it feel when you practice? Avoid distractions and turn off the screens and electronics. Some people like music, and that's fine. We practice with quiet, which suits us best. With daily practice (15 minutes every day at a minimum), this method of breathing gradually becomes unconscious, and if you are tense or upset you can switch to meditative breathing for a minute or two and improve how you feel very quickly. The key is keeping practice consistent. #meditate #zen #mindfulness #diaphragm #breathing #breath #selfcare #healthcare #mindset #holistichealth #acucentrerichmondhill

At Acupuncture Centre Richmond Hill we are proud to have an amazing team at your service! The combination of registered massage therapy + acupuncture is very powerful and we make sure that our mutual patients get the best teamwork we can give. Why does this match up work so well? Acupuncture needles are precision tools that stimulate the body's systems with both broad and specific effects. If the tissues are "blocked", then massage therapy can "unblock" them, enhancing acupu...ncture's effectiveness. Massage works on the body from the surface, and the therapist's hands masterfully release tension and adhesion. If the problems runs deep, or are in very thin, wiry tissues, an acupuncture needle can help to access that area more directly and precisely. Sure acupuncture or massage alone may get the job done, but the combination helps reduce the overall number of sessions required to do so - the effect together can be greater than each alone. It also helps that Jeff and Wing (our registered acupuncturist and registered massage therapist) are a dedicated husband and wife team that know each other's styles and methods intimately - this is a unique relationship that leads to a truly comprehensive multi-disciplinary treatment plan. #acupuncture #massage #healthcare #teamwork #therapy #wellness #bestlife #painfree #richmondhill #ontario #toronto #healthcareteam #collaboration #acucentrerichmondhill

It is less common now, but it does still happen where patients come in to see us for acupuncture after "trying EVERYTHING" but nothing worked for them. When they see results they are overjoyed and wish they had come to us sooner. These cases are especially rewarding because for many of these patients we are their last hope. We can't fix everything, but we do our best and let you know what solutions we can provide for you. #acupuncture #acupunctureworks #hope #lastresort #healthcare #painfree #chronicpain #chronicconditions #acucentrerichmondhill #thanks #grateful #loveyourneighbour #richmondhill #ontario

It really depends on how often you ovulate. Some women don't ovulate every cycle - if hormone levels are far enough out of balance, ovulation may be completely skipped. If you're trying to become pregnant, your highest chances to conceive are 2-3 days prior to ovulation. There are a few ways to tell if you're ovulating. Medical observation by a fertility clinic is common when performing intrauterine insemination (IUI), but this method requires frequent visits to the clinic an...d can be costly. Ovulation kits to use at home can usually be purchased at a local pharmacy, also requiring frequent kit checks. In our clinic we prefer to use basal body temperature tracking (BBT), which requires consistency - checking at the same time daily. We use this because the charts build into a history of information over time, allowing us to identify different issue we may need to address. #fertility #infertility #acupuncture #ovulation #naturalfertility #pregnancytest #familyplanning #facts

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and it often accompanied by signs of damage to another organ system, usually the liver and kidneys. Preeclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had been normal. Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition that only develops as a complication of pregnancy. Risk factors for developing preeclampsia include: -History of preeclampsia.... -Chronic hypertension. -First pregnancy. The risk of developing preeclampsia is highest during your first pregnancy. -New paternity. Each pregnancy with a new partner increases the risk of preeclampsia more than does a second or third pregnancy with the same partner. -Age. The risk of preeclampsia is higher for very young women as well as women older than 35. -Race. Black women have a higher risk of developing preeclampsia than women of other races. -Obesity. -Multiple pregnancy. Preeclampsia is more common in women who are carrying twins, triplets or other multiples. -Interval between pregnancies. Having babies less than two years or more than 10 years apart leads to a higher risk of preeclampsia. -History of certain conditions. Having certain conditions before you become pregnant such as chronic high blood pressure, migraines, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, a tendency to develop blood clots, or lupus increases your risk of preeclampsia. -In vitro fertilization (IVF). Your risk of preeclampsia is increased if your baby was conceived with in vitro fertilization. Acupuncture is well known to help control blood pressure and may be able to help manage the common forms of gestational hypertension. Prevention is the best medicine. If you are unsure if you are at risk of developing preeclampsia, speaking with your doctor is a recommended first step. #preeclampsia #hypertension #highbloodpressure #pregnant #pregnancy #eclampsia #prevention #preventativemedicine #pregnant #ivf #healthcare #naturalmedicine #naturalhealthcare #acucentrerichmondhill

10-20% of all known pregnancies end in miscarriage Most miscarriages occur before the 12th week of pregnancy After 1 miscarriage, you have a 20% chance of miscarrying again, and that % increases with each subsequent miscarriage At least half of miscarriages are caused by chromosomal problems in the developing fetus Risk of miscarriage increases dramatically after the age of 40 (whether you’re a man or woman)... Miscarriage can be emotionally devastating to prospective parents. Symptoms of emotional distress include: o fatigue o trouble sleeping o difficulty concentrating o loss of appetite o frequent episodes of crying o More severe symptoms may occur, and in some cases, therapy may be suggested Acupuncture and TCM may be used to treat recurring miscarriage and infertility #miscarriage #pregnancyloss #miscarriageawareness #facts #acupuncture #wellness #naturalfertilty #pregnancy

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! This holiday is special because it is here to remind us of all that we have to be grateful for in our lives; caring family, good friends, and a hearty meal to share with them is a recipe for happiness. This year many of us (most, really) will be celebrating virtually with our extended families, much like we did for birthdays, Easter, and other special days over the spring and summer. As with any given day, let's all make the most of it. Wha...t are you thankful for right now? We are grateful for the patients we have who put their trust in us, the city we live in and are raising our kids in, the friends and family we've kept in touch with throughout the pandemic, and the new friends we've made along the way. We are grateful for the local businesses we shop at and support, and the places we go to for our hobbies. We are happy for our friends and family who've gotten engaged/married/had kids, and those who are taking the extra family time as a gift. No matter what you're going through right now, there is something to be thankful for. Much love to you all #thanksgiving #turkey #turkeyday #gratitude #mindset #2020 #helpingothers #payitforward #holidays #family #familytime #leftoversforaweek #acupuncture #massage #healthcare

With so many people working from home, having virtual school, and being on the computer more, we are seeing a rise in physical pains related to sitting and computer use. The main areas of pain are the neck/shoulder, and the hips/lower back. What can you do to help ease (or even better - prevent) these aching pains? These tips can be mostly applied to both problems: 1) Get up and move throughout the day, every hour if you can. Stretch, walk, squat, and stand tall. Rotate the j...oints and move the muscles; remind them they don't have to hold a single posture all of the time. 2) Ergonomics. You can easily look up desk and computer ergonomics, but the basic idea is a straight back (with the natural curves, maintained), relaxed shoulders, and 90 degree bends in the elbows, knees, and hips. Neutral, supported wrists. 3) Get off the computer and away from the desk when not working. How are you spending your downtime? Turn the screens off and give your body a break Most of the problems that develop from computer use are due to posture, repetitive strain, and the simple fact that sitting all day is really bad for our bodies. If you are finding that pain is lasting more than a week, it may be time to seek out professional help. Naturally, we recommend acupuncture and/or massage therapy Best of luck to you all! #workfromhome #ergonomics #posture #neckpain #painrelief #bestlife #acupuncture #massagetherapy #painfree #healthcare #naturalpainrelief #backpain

Take a moment to gauge yourself; how are you feeling recently? Stress levels are rising due to a number of factors, much of which is beyond our control. What can we do to help manage our emotional well being? First, let's take a moment and just breathe. If you're experiencing a constant whirlwind of parenting, working, managing school, managing the home, and losing socialization and hobbies, then taking care of yourself may be getting lost in the mix. While self-care is often... what's put on hold, that may be exactly what you need to feel better and function at a higher level. Here are a few of our favourite ideas to de-stress and find comfort in the home: 1) Read a book. A favourite novel lets you escape from the weight of the day and refresh your mind 2) Exercise. It doesn't have to be a lot. Anything to get the heart rate above your normal levels can improve mood and help you sleep better 3) Talk to someone. A partner, a friend, family - some you trust and can be open with. We don't have to go at it alone, and chances are high that whoever you open up to can relate to your struggles 4) Play. Have fun. Play board games, play with your kids, and spend time together with no expectations. 5) Appreciate the little things. All throughout the day we experience ups and downs, and if we appreciate the simple pleasures then the challenges of life seem less significant and can be easier to manage. The bottom line is that finding and/or creating moments of joy, no matter how small, takes the edge off of stress factors and add up to make a big impact on your emotional well being. #emotionalhealth #mentalhealth #covid19 #stressrelief #acupuncture #wellness #bestlife #mindfulness #zen #familytime #reading #books #exercise #play #parenting #happyparenting #acucentrerichmondhill

The health benefits of cinnamon cannot be overlooked! It's anti-inflammatory, good for the heart, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, benefits diabetics (type 2), and is high in antioxidants. TCM describes cinnamon as a very warming herb. It is used to move blood and treat pain, and benefits the kidneys, heart, and reproductive systems. Because it is so warm, it may not be appropriate for all conditions, but if you have pain that is worse with cold, damp weat...her, then this is for you. #healthyeating #eatlocal #acupuncture #acupuncturist #richmondhill #ontario #seasonaleating #delicious #healthcare #foodismedicine #tcm #naturalhealthcare #cinnamon #painfree #painrelief

September through October is apple season and this wonderful fruit is both delicious and full of health boosting properties. TCM describes apples as supporting the lungs, liver, and heart, as well as regulating the bowels. They have been linked to helping with IBS, cholesterol, heart disease, asthma, and strengthening the immune system, among other benefits. For an added boost to both flavour and health, add some cinnamon to your apple-filled foods! Cinnamon is warming and is... a great addition for cooking in autumn and winter as the weather turns cold, but if you’re a naturally hot constitution, it may be best to skip that spice. Need ideas on how to use your apples? -Apple cinnamon oatmeal (skip the pre-made stuff - too much sugar!) -Homemade apple pie filling (easy, takes about 15 minutes to make, and you can control the sweetness. We don't do pie or crumble just because it takes too long, but if you've got the time and energy, go for it!) -Apple slices with peanut butter (easy snack, great for kids. Not allowed in school) -Apple butter (really, it's jam, but for some reason no one says "apple jam") *Pro tip: Apples are naturally high in pectin and can be used when making your own jam. We use apple peels, but whole apples can be used as well. Make sure you cook it long enough to release the pectin. #apples #foodismedicine #healthycooking #eatlocal #acupuncture #acupuncturist #richmondhill #ontario #cinnamon #spiceoflife #autumn #seasonaleating #delicious #healthcare

When the baby is born, everything seems to become about the new little miracle you've just brought into the world. This is priority #1, of course, but we should also remember to take care of the new parents, especially mom, who's body has undergone MASSIVE changes for almost a year and is suddenly trying to adjust to the needs of a tiny human that just came out of her body. In addition to lactation and potential breast-feeding issues, new parents are sleep-deprived and often ...stressed - moreso for first time parents, who are often learning in a trial by fire Mom is also dealing with after-delivery healing, stretch marks, milk supply (and potential mastitis), and hormonal changes, among other things. In China and much of East Asia there is a tradition of the "sitting month" where mom basically rests as much as possible and is waited on for her every need while recovering and bonding with the newborn. It may sound glamorous, but is not without it's challenges! What can acupuncture and massage treat for post-partum moms? o Insufficient lactation o Stretch marks and C-section scars o Hormone regulation o Anxiety o Depression #acupuncture #massage #newmom #newmomlife #postpartumbody #postpartum #lactation #scarhealing #stretchmarks #hormones #acucentrerichmondhill

Goodbye summer, hello autumn! Today marks the first day of fall The change between seasons is always a volatile time. Days are warm(ish) and evenings are cool; weather is up and down. Transitioning from summer to autumn means slowing down and preparing for the dark chill of winter. In the coming months we will start to see people having less energy and lower moods. Keeping up with exercise can be difficult as getting out becomes inconvenient, but it's an important part of ...staying healthy. Even light activity like a 20 minute walk will boost both mood and energy. Autumn is filled with crisp air and bright colours, so get out there and enjoy it while it lasts! As the sun sets earlier, sleeping a little earlier is beneficial and if you can, waking a little bit later helps too! #summer #autumn #changingseasons #nature #naturelife #fluseason #sad #seasonal #winter #mood #acupuncture #TCM #healthyliving #environment

We regularly get asked about preparing a woman for labour, making delivery smoother, and (lots of questions for) acupuncture for labour induction. First of all, yes we treat pregnant women for all of these goals and more. The best is when we have the time to monitor and prepare throughout the entire pregnancy, but with as little as a month or two we can create a comprehensive plan to suit your needs. When you want to try to do things as naturally as possible acupuncture is a ...great choice. Acupuncture does not involve any drugs or medicines, has minimal side effects (if any), and works with your body's natural processes. For more information, see our website (in bio) or book a consult and see what solutions we can offer. #acupuncture #pregnancy #pregnancycare #massage #childbirth #naturalchildbirth #birthpreparation #naturalhealthcare #acucentrerichmondhill
