Still cold. Very cold out there. Make sure you bundle up and cover your skin as it can freeze very quick in this weather. No one wants frostbite! No one wants to be in an accident either! Eyes on the road! No distracted driving!

Hi friends! As the weekend is fast approaching, lets take a minute to #celebratethenorth The storied community of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut (pronounced Joe Haven to y...ou silly southerners) is located on the southeast coast of King William Island at the heart of the Northwest Passage. This hamlet is home to 1400 people and Canada's most northern vertical farming project. The Naurvik Greenhouse (naurvik meaning "the growing place" in Inuinnaqtun) is a hydroponic sea can 20 ft. long with 96 sq. ft. of growing space. The aim is to develop crop production technology and improve the accessibility of food across the north. It is powered by wind turbines and solar panels. Fun Fact: The English name for this place honors the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen who wintered here with his ship the Gjøa. He called this place ‘the finest little harbor in the world.’ In 1906 he was the first European explorer to transit the Northwest Passage. The John Ross expedition of 1829-1833 had previously visited this region and the ill-fated John Franklin expedition of 1845 perished nearby, so Gjoa Haven is often visited by arctic history buffs.

This morning, #PSDOliver of the SPS Canine Unit was rushed to the vet for emergency treatment after sustaining injuries from a knife while attempting to take a ...suspect into custody following an evade police incident. Thankfully, the kevlar vest that he was wearing at the time prevented further serious injury or death. A solemn reminder of the dangers of policing to both our human & K9 members.

A widow has called for defibrillators to be made a legal requirement after the death of her husband from an undiagnosed heart condition aged 32. Kelly Best said they should be as widespread as fire extinguishers as 15 young people a week die from sudden cardiac arrests. Another successful AED save! Off-duty Saskatoon paramedic, Mitchell Ehr, was visiting Edmonton's Royal Alberta Museum with his family when he saw a man go into cardiac arrest. Rescuers applied the pads of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and delivered one shock to the man.... "Following that shock and during the second round of compressions about four or five minutes later the man began breathing on his own, opened his eyes, and his pulse returned." https://thestarphoenix.com//off-duty-saskatoon-paramedic-/

The biggest misconception we hear is that using an AED requires formal training. Though we want rescuers to be comfortable with AEDs and performing CPR, training is not a necessity. "You don’t need any training to use a machine, as they direct you with voice commands. The devices detect heart rhythm and are designed to only deliver a shock when it will help." Check out these 6th graders learning to use a device.... https://youtu.be/2yPqdB4L9oU?list=PL93CE1CCFB20F0810

Happy Valentine's Day! We at AED Advantage hope you are all taking the necessary steps to protect your heart. Is there an AED on-site at your children's school? At the rink where you spend countless hours watching hockey drills? At church where you attend the Sunday service? There is little regulation currently in effect requiring mandatory placement of these life-saving devices on-site. It's everyone's responsibility to ensure an AED is nearby and to bring your concerns to t...he attention of the appropriate people if not. "For every one minute delay in defibrillation, the survival rate of a cardiac arrest victim decreases by 7 to 10%. After more than 12 minutes of ventricular fibrillation, the survival rate is less than 5%." - The Heart and Stroke Foundation

In light of the cardiac episode Jay Bouwmeester of the St. Lous Blues experienced in his NHL game against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night, we were prompted to dig deeper into Hockey Canada's rules and regulations regarding AEDs in rinks. Unfortunately, there is still no regulation requiring these lifesaving units to be on site. In 2013 however, the Canadian government committed to a four-year, $10-million project that assessed the needs of 3,000 arenas across the country,... equipping many of them with a device. We, along with Hockey Canada, urge every player, coach and fan to make sure there is an AED on-site when they enter a rink. Also, that you familiarize yourself with the location of the device and how to use it. Hockey Canada states, "Heroes don’t just happen, they’re trained! CPR and AED’s Saves Lives!" The good news is, training is not required to use these devices. They are very easy to use, as verbal prompts walk a rescuer through the process step-by-step. "Hockey rinks (and the players in them) are the "heart and soul of communities across the country." Let's work together to ensure these public areas we Canadians are spending so much time in, are safe.
