It's Family Sundays in the Studio with Béla Varga! This week we are learning all about Renaissance Art. The shaping and shaving of glass allowed us to create new inventions like the telescope and the camera that would change the way man thought about the world. One of these artists was well ahead of his time and we'll channel the great Leonardo Da Vinci in this sketchbook exercise.... Materials: A pencil, journal or sketchbook, coloured pencils or marker optional! https://youtu.be/5tWVNa-qzUk

We would like to welcome Micaela Muldoon, Coordinator, Digital Initiatives, at the AGW! A Windsor native, Micaela pursued her B.A. as a double-major in Creative Writing and Communications at the University of Windsor. On this #RemembranceDay, we remember and honour those who served our country; those who are responsible for our freedom. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. . . William Kurelek was born near Willingdon, Alberta, in 1927, the eldest of seven children in a Ukrainian immigrant farming family. Although he suffered from debilitating mental illness, he became one of Canada’s most prolific, well-known and commercially successful artists. Though Kurelek’s artistic interests wer...e largely limited to figurative painting, they ranged from historical to contemporary images. His narrative, representational and often nostalgic work explored diverse themes from charming youthful recollections to nationalism, to unsettling and controversial explorations of social issues, including the threat of nuclear war, religion and the futility of violence. While largely self-taught, he studied in Winnipeg at the University of Manitoba; in Toronto at the Ontario College of Art; and in Mexico at Instituto Allende. . Kurelek’s A Little Matter of International Politics, 1965, implies the violence of war in a bleak, yet tranquil, winter scene. Soldiers’ bodies litter the landscape and form a pile in the foreground near a trench. This painting is similar to other works Kurelek produced through the 1960s and 1970s works that became more polarizing for viewers, as Kurelek oscillated between the nostalgic and the nightmarish in his exploration of themes such as war, crime, and religion. Seven years before he made A Little Matter of International Politics, the artist converted to Roman Catholicism. . William Kurelek (born, north of Willingdon, Alberta, 1927 died, Toronto, Ontario, 1977). A Little Matter of International Politics, 1965. Mixed media on Masonite, 19 x 36 inches. Collection of the Art Gallery of Windsor; Gift of St. Clair College, 2020. . . #lestweforget #RemembranceDay2020 See more

Our second art walk was a huge success! Artist April Morris led participants through the West End of Windsor, to the former site of the Grace hospital, and back down the alleys of Downtown Windsor. We drew, learned, wrote and discussed important themes ranging from gentrification in our city, the need for public art installations and community gardens, to who owns this land. Keep an eye on social media for upcoming walks!
