Is your child/youth experiencing some anxiety and has some worries or fears with the start up of school this year? They are not alone! Loads of people experience anxiety when there is something new. With a new school year comes loads of uncertainty and anxiety feeds on this!! Here are a few tips that can help with some of those fears and worries: 1. Talk about it. Let them know it is normal to experience these worries.... 2. Shift the focus to something else (go for a walk, watch something funny, do a craft) 3. Write the worried thoughts down and put them somewhere for safekeeping. This allows them to take the thought out of their thought tornado, see it on paper, and place it somewhere to contain it. 4. Hard time falling asleep? Practice relaxation before bed with chill music, stretching, or progressive relaxation. Here is a link to one of many progressive relaxation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNqYG95j_UQ Anxiety playlist on my YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/playlist Looking for support for your child or teen? Ever given yourself a timeout?? Taking that break when you are feeling overwhelmed can allow you to bring yourself back down to calm. This break can be encouraged whether you are getting overwhelmed OR if you see someone else getting overwhelmed (your partner or your child). 3 things to remember: 1. Be aware of your own emotional level ... 2. Take a time out - tell the other person you need a few minutes to yourself 3. do an activity that will calm you down Looking for ideas of what to do when you are overwhelmed? Before school starts up this fall I encourage you to take some down time...whatever that looks like. Maybe it's a drive to the mountains, a day out at the lake, sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, working on your favorite project... Nature is my refill and so I am off to recharge and refill my tank! I'll be back with some new videos August 23rd!! #selfcare #nature #familytime

Grounding is a great way to shift the focus from unhelpful thinking especially if you find yourself in a thought tornado. What is a thought tornado? it starts out with one thought and continues to spiral often with "what ifs" about the past and/or future. Grounding can help distract your mind if it seems like the thoughts are taking over your day, making it hard to focus or making it hard to go to sleep. These grounding techniques fall into 3 areas: 1. Mental Grounding 2. S...oothing Grounding and 3. Physical Grounding Here is the link to the handout I use ALL the time in counselling from Winona State University: https://www.winona.edu/resili/Media/Grounding-Worksheet.pdf If you think these tools may be helpful for another person I encourage you to share this video with them so they can get a bite size introduction into grounding tools as well! Love maps are building a map to increase our knowledge and understanding of our partner's inner world. Asking questions like: what was your favorite holiday? What is your favorite memory of us as a couple? What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you? What is the food you like the most? dislike the most? There are many other questions that you can ask but I definitely recommend asking further clarifying questions like: tell me more about _____, what was it ...about that _____ you liked. Here are some of the benefits of building love maps: shows interest builds up knowledge of their inner world increases things you know about the other learning more can assist us to appreciate them more increases friendship Look for support for your relationship? Time for some reflection. Things are a changin! A new year is often a time that we take a seat and look back on that last year at what we liked and what we didn't like. With the changes that have happened in the last couple weeks with covid and decreases with restrictions, maybe it's a good time to sit down and reflect. ... There may be a push to slide back into rituals, activities, and get togethers to match what things looked like pre-covid. Take a few minutes to explore: What I want to take with me. What I want to leave behind. Maybe there are some new habits you have created, new rituals, some appreciation for some of that family time, you want to prioritize certain things/relationships. Whatever your items are, I hope that you can take some time to reflect on this past year and a half and allow yourself time to process, to release some of the energy and to give yourself a fresh perspective moving forward. This is one of my favorite tools to assist our kids when they are experiencing some big emotions or worries. I shared this back in September 2020 and wanted to send it out again to remind us all of the benefits of hugs for ourselves, our partners, our kids and family. "Because most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you'll have more time, and more tranquility" - Marcus Aurelius Yes this is easier said than done! First step is to be aware of what we are doing. For example, if I am consistently adding tasks onto my morning routine that increase my feelings of overwhelm but I am unaware of this...the overwhelm just continues. My visual reminder on the mirror is just one way to change a habit I have created that I... would like to change. Here are a few ideas of things you can write on your mirror: - love notes (to self or others) - positive quotes - your personal mantra like I am enough (check the link below for some other ideas) - a goal - a reminder - what you are grateful for What else could you write ?? Teaching our kids coping tools doesn't have to be complicated or intense! Horse breathing is a goofy and fun way to introduce deep breathing to our kids, and to ourselves. Remember to teach this tool when you and your child are calm and to have fun with it! Making this a fun process can assist our kids to shift from overwhelm to more calm. In the beginning we may teach and do the breathing technique with them when they are overwhelmed, but it will shift to them using it when... they find themselves getting overwhelmed after practicing. Celebrate throughout the process, we're all learning to calm ourselves-even us parents ;) Cookie breathing https://youtu.be/SDgrOd_vjrc Finger Breathing https://youtu.be/GRM1rwkYvB0 Looking for other tips and tricks? As a parent, it can be challenging to fill your own self-care tank. That doesn’t make it any less important. Here is one idea my partner and I use that helps us to get some time for ourselves on a weekly basis. I saw a visual the other day of a person carrying a heavy backpack and two large bags. Another person came along and didn't take the bags away but assisted the person to carry the heavy bags by grabbing a handle. In life we can sometimes feel like we have to carry these bags all on our own. We are afraid to ask for help for fear of being exposed, looked down upon, pitied or even disowned. These fears can stop us from reaching out for support from loved ones and from professio...nals. Yes it is important to pick the people we are going to share with because not everyone can be or should be a support. Think about who makes up your village. Which huts can you go to and talk about your concern. Is this a family member, a good friend, a coworker or a counsellor? Does that bag feel heavy? maybe it is time to pass one of the handles to that hand reaching out. They aren't going to take it from you or for you, but they can sit with you, hold your hand, give you a hug and most importantly listen. Does your child or youth struggle to fall to sleep? Does the stress, the worried thoughts and their fears seem to get really big right before bed? Often this is the first time our brain has a chance to relax and so it is common for the anxiety to come up at bed time. This can be really hard as a parent because we are finishing up the day and are also feeling tired and ready for some me time and relaxation time. You did some bed time routines that worked before but still your... child or youth is up and worrying. The good news is there are some specific things that can help with this and can be done so your brain moves from think time to sleep time. I provided a few tips within this video but I do want to encourage you to do some detective work. Explore what those thoughts are before bed. Are they usually associated with something specific? What are the bedtime rituals (brush teeth, wash face, put pjs on, read a story etc)? How do you practice calming down? If you are finding that your child or youth is struggling with racing thoughts before bed time and those worried thoughts make it very hard to go to bed there are ways to assist them to take control of their anxiety and have a more restful sleep. My job is to assist parents and their kids learn more about the anxiety, identify specific tools that will help to combat those worried thoughts and to gain control of the anxiety and in this case have a more restful sleep. Gosh there is soo much pressure on us as parents to know everything, to do it all just right and to do it on our own! Can anyone else relate to this?? When it comes to our children's mental wellness we hate to see them struggle, we do copiousamounts of research, and we try numerous things to shift and support them in working through their concerns. We all struggle to reach out for support as we think that it makes us weak, or that we should know all the answers. But I am he...re to tell you that perfect parenting and knowing everything doesn't exist! We can't know everything it just isn't possible. It's okay to not know. Counsellors spend years training to support the specific concerns your child or youth is struggling with. As a parent myself, I believe in the importance of involving parents in the process of counselling. You are one of the main supports for your kids and helping you and them learn more about let's say anxiety will allow for more calm in your house, less overwhelm, feeling in control and ultimately feeling like both you and your kids have the tools to feel more in control of that concern. You don't have to do this alone. Support is within reach. The symptoms we most see are those behavioural symptoms of anxiety that I talk about in this video. A new year often equals new resolutions and goals. Because this year was not what any of us expected, you may feel apprehensive about setting new goals. That is okay! Maybe this year it would benefit to create tiny or small goals. Things that will give you some feel good wins. Maybe it is going to bed 30 minutes earlier, or enjoying a warm beverage each morning. Even 5% changes add up!!... Also, who says January needs to be for setting new goals? for some it is better to start at the beginning of spring or even in September when the kids go back to school. No matter when you are setting goals here are some tips to identify your goals and to implement those new habits. Thinking it's time to go to counselling? Confused as to where to start?? Where to search? It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to reach out for support. That's why it is so important to find someone you can trust to talk to. Here are a few ways to find someone:... - ask a friend or a family member if they know someone - ask members of a Facebook group you are in for their recommendations - do some research on counsellors that work with the concern you have Not sure of where to find info on counsellors: PsychologyToday.com has listings of counsellors and you can search for your specific concern too. Anxiety is normal! It is our body's natural way of responding to a threat (like a tiger) or a perceived threat (like fear of failure, a change, uncertainty, or even the unknown). It is our own personal internal alarm system. First off, identifying the anxiety can assist in giving it less control over you. Also, knowing that it is a natural response can make one feel more empowered. Although anxiety is a natural response, if it is interfering with day to day life, causing a...voidance of activities, or leading to struggles daily, I encourage you to reach out for support for you or a loved one. Looking for more information about these three responses and how they come up? check out my video here: https://youtu.be/PyP2-VjqrQs Anxiety is a topic I have worked with for many years, seeing clients individually (6 years and up), in groups (Worry Dragons and Youth Experiencing Anxiety) and providing presentations for parents and caregivers. Whether this year proved to be a challenge, a blessing or a mixture of both of these things, it definitely was an interestingyear to say the least! I encourage you to take a few minutes to think about the last year. Think about some of those items you will be leaving in 2020.... Maybe you'releaving some resentment, grief, overthinking, or even some of the frustrations and sadness. Maybe you will choose to leave expectations or at least certain ones behind. Like the expectations to do it all and be it all. By running around, cleaning house, doing laundry, juggling work and home, all the while having less of your village to support you. This is one thing I am going to be leavinga chunk of behind. If 2020 has taught me anything, it is that the laundry, the dishes, the housework etc will be there tomorrow. The kids don't care about the basket of laundry, the sink full of dishes. Thank you friend for this reminder! *What about what you will take with you? Will it be your new appreciation for nature, for rest, for naps, plants? Maybe it will be appreciation for the support people, your family and friends. Will you take a new habit with you? The daily cup of tea, time you prioritizefor you (resting, playing games, having a bath, going for a walk). Maybe it is the new way we are connecting with people close and far away. Gratefulness for a world full of technology that allows us to be connected when we cannot be in person. . . Whatever your two items are, I hope that you can take some time to reflect on this past year and allow yourself time to process, to release some of the energy and to give yourself a fresh perspectivemoving into 2021. For those items you are leaving, this chest will keep them safe. You are welcome to visit them but know they are here for safekeeping. A lot of things have shifted and for many their expectations of this holiday season have been changed. With the new changes also comes grief for many. Many are grieving things like: * changes to the holidays * less time with extended family ... * changes in expectations * missing family and loved ones * not travelling for the holidays * missing family events that were scheduled to happen It is okay to be sad and to grieve these things. On the other hand, It is also okay not to grieve these things and feel relieved that maybe things will be smaller and be less overwhelming. Whatever you are experiencing that is okay. If you are experiencing grief, here are 5 tips to cope: - Label it as grief - Give space to process - Reach out for support - Say an affirmation to yourself - Take care of you - set aside a few minutes to enjoy a cup of tea or go for a walk Allow yourself to feel it, to be present with it but also remember that it is okay and normal to shift back and forth between grieving and living. #grief #reachout #support #change #awareness #counselling #therapy #support #psychology #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #beintentional #selfcare #mindshift #parents #parenting #yougotthis #kids #youthcounselling #anxiety #worries #wecandohardthings

Are you interested in seeing a counsellor but not sure where to start? First thing is to find someone that will be a good fit. Look into a few people and find someone you feel comfortable with or you think your child or youth may feel comfortable with. . Here are three areas to search: ~ Psychologytoday.com type your location... ~ counsellors website (can be found on their psychology today profile) ~ Check out their Business Social Media (facebook and instagram is often linked from their website) All of these avenues will give you an idea of who they are, what concerns they work with and how they can support you. https://youtu.be/anipAaZw114 #angelajans #psychologytoday #socialmedia #tools #therapytools #counsellingtools #howtofindacounsellor #searchengine #goodfit #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealth #counselling #coping #support #parenting #parentsupport #lethbridge #calgary #YQL #BewellYQL #psychology

Gosh am I grateful for change and having hope that the future will look different. . This season has brought with it a lot of stress, anxiety, overwhelm and for some conflict. It seems that on a weekly basis things are changing and shifting. Change and uncertainty has always been there but for me it seems as though these two things are more in my face right now. We are all moving through this in different ways and I've heard it said that we are all in the same storm but in di...fferent boats. . . I encourage you to continue to reach out for support in the ways that work best for you. In this time we have numerous ways to still connect (telephone, zoom, facetime, going outside). You don't have to do this alone, reach out to your village of support, including counsellors in your community. . . #changeisstable #bobdylanquotes #support #facetime #zoom #youdonthavetodothisalone #counselling #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #wellness #selfcare #copingtools #psychology #therapy #therapytools #counsellingtools #parenting #parentingtools #parentsupport #change #weareinthistogether #bewellyql #lethbridge #calgary See more

Self compassion ...what a powerful tool. If you've never heard of it before go check out Kristin Neff's work. Being on our own side and being compassionate and kind with ourselves is important. ... Often we would not say the things we say to ourselves to the people we love. BUT we do. We say to ourselves things like: . I'm a failure I'll never get this right I have no idea what I'm doing Everyone thinks I messed up . . How about in those moments where you are struggling you say to yourself . May I be kind to myself May I have compassion for myself You are enough Its okay to be imperfect . . Try one out and see how you feel . #selfcompassion #selftalk #internaldialogue #iamenough #youarenough #psychology #therapy #counselling #mentalhealthmatters #therapytools #beintentional #selfcare #mindshift #tools

We remember... In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky... The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. #rememberanceday

Are you experiencing worried thoughts? First off, it's normal! We all worry, especially when there is uncertainty....which is also common especially right now. . . Here are two tips to cope with those thoughts .... 1. Worry stones can hold onto the worried thoughts so you don't have to. . 2. Distraction can be a very helpful tool. It's really just about shifting where you focus your attention. You can go for a walk, play a game, watch a funny show, name everything you see that is green, or stretch your body. . Looking for more tools related to anxiety and worries? I'm offering an online presentation via zoom November 26th 2020 at 630pm.
