Usually I’ll collect the references and propose the layout on my own. But this one called for a very specific idea that was already determined by the team. Which is totally fine with me. They are a teacher and an actor who decided that they were passionate about podcasting. They took a leap and decided to try something new during the pandemic. I've known I wanted to be in the arts since kindergarten. I'd visit the craft table daily and even had my construction paper creations photographed... by the principal. I went to an art high school @esa_contemporary_art and then art college, majoring in illustration @ocaduniversity Going into the arts is not an easy path. But I knew in my heart it would be the only one to lead to true happiness for me. Thankfully I had my parents full support too, which was a huge help. The pandemic has also been such a huge catalyst for people to change their lifestyles and drop jobs and habits that no longer work for them. My goal has always been to add more passive income to my mix of illustration work. So I decided to try out @catcoq @skillshare course on creating repeating patterns in @procreate Her technique was super easy and fun! So here's my first hand drawn repeating pattern - Feathers! I'm planning on starting an art licensing portfolio. It allows one image to be sold over and over on various products. The artist earns royalties on sales.... All those beautiful housewares, greeting cards, gift bags etc - they all have an artist behind them. A licensing portfolio is very different from a normal portfolio. I'll have to create a "menu" of artworks. I'm still learning and wrapping my head around it, but I think it's going to be a fun self-directed project. I'm also going to be adding these to print on demand shops like Society6, Spoonflower, Redbubble etc for immediate purchase. I've also created four different colour ways. Which one is your favourite? Grief is a strange thing. It fades and changes with time but a memory or connection can trigger it and make it wash over you all over again. Death makes people feel awkward. It’s so final and finite. Everyone processes it in their own way. Most don’t know what to do or say. I know I’ve definitely felt like that when I’m on the other side of it. But now that I’m on the receiving end of sympathy I really empathize with other people’s uncomfortableness. I also appreciate any ges...ture they feel comfortable giving. Know that reaching out to someone who is going through a loss is never a burden to them. It’s a comfort. Human connection is essential in these times. I thought I would spend my life never feeling like an adult. But here I am at 41 with no parents. I definitely feel like an adult now. Settling accounts, bills, endless phone calls, making sure everything is in order. Never mind having to clear out a house with a lifetime full of stuff and worrying about what to do with it all. So many decisions. There’s no one left to ask advice from, no one to turn to for help course correcting my life. It’s strange. Some days I like to pretend I just haven’t called my Mom in a while. For now I’ve been taking it slow. Doing what I can every day. Trying to get back to work to distract myself. Laughing with friends and loving my family. Remembering all the good times and allowing the grief to wash over me when it needs to.

I remember when I was starting out in the big world of freelance illustration. I had so many questions and I was so scared to make a mistake. Every time a potential client would reach out I would panic. I would approach the relationship as if they had all the power, that I should be grateful that they were choosing me for the job. I would even start work without a contract and then hope that they were trustworthy enough to pay me in the end. Sound familiar? I see wa...y too many creatives doing this and then posting on group boards in a panic when something goes wrong. Hoping to get advice on building an "undo button" to erase their mistakes. I kept thinking that if they just did the right thing in the first place and built a good foundation for their client relationships, they wouldn't be in this situation. I've thought about a way of fixing this and I've decided to create a template out of the contract that I use every day with my clients.
