THE POWERFUL WHOLE-FOOD POWDER THAT FIGHTS CANINE ARTHRITIS! Perna mussels (also called green-lipped mussel [GLM]) are a natural alternative to nonstero...idal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in dogs and work their magic through similar actions in the body. As the name implies, these supplements come from the green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) that’s native to the New Zealand coast. It has a bright green stripe around its shell and a distinctive green lip on the inside of its shell. GLMs have long been used by the Maori, and scientists have documented that the Maori people living on the coast enjoy much lower rates of arthritis compared to inland Maori people. GLM contain a range of bioactive lipids; including EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and furan fatty acids (F-acids), sphingolipids, phytosterols, diacylglycerols, diterpenes, sesquiterpenes, pro-resolving lipid mediators, and saponins, alongside anti-oxidants such as carotenoids, xanthophylls, anthocyanins. GLM extract is clinically proven to ease the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. In 2006, for example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving eighty-one dogs with mild-to-moderate degenerative joint disease found that dogs significantly benefit from long-term (eight weeks or longer) supplementation with a tablet containing 125 mg of GLM extract. A 2013 study published in the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research reported that a diet enriched with GLM extract significantly improved the gait of dogs clinically afflicted with OA compared with a regular control diet. Dogs fed the GLM-enriched diet also absorbed high levels of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids into their blood. The researchers concluded that GLM extract showed a strong ability to benefit dogs with OA. When it comes to your dog’s digestive system: studies show GLM acts as a nutrient for beneficial gut bacteria, which when consumed, encourages these healthy bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), substances which exert numerous beneficial effects throughout the body. This improved state helps the body achieve balance, or homeostasis, allowing the body to function at optimal levels and reduce systemic inflammation. Of course when battling arthritis, inflammation, or any other disease for that matter, a multi-modular approach is always best! So, having GLM as an extra tool in your toolbox will take you a lot further along when it comes to bettering your dog's overall healthspan. Freeze-dried mussels are available as dog treats, and powdered supplements are readily available. Dose: 150 mg per ten pounds (4.5 kg) of body weight daily, divided in meals. As with people, the longest lived dogs often have healthy dietary habits in common. In the Supplement: Custom Curated Support section of our new book, The Forever Dog, Green Lipped Mussel is one of the many supplements we recommend sharing with your dog. We also explain how to incorporate supplements into your dog’s meals, along with suggested dosages. Get your copy now: foreverdogextras.com/pet-longevity

A great article shared by a trainer. Our Molesley doesn’t like the company of little puppies. We respect his boundaries and he enjoys the company of other adult dogs. Pay attention to what your dog is telling you about their preferences.

I saw this shared on another page and thought it was very interesting. I have often contemplated if trying to create a life of being busy and stimulated isnt generating the same stress and reactive behaviors it creates in the human population.

Molesley and I took a nice drive to Blackie today so that little Paisley can start Puppy Boot camp at Living Prairie Kennel. It was a perfect fall day for a drive and Molesley loved to visit his friend Michelle. Then we stopped to see Gail and Gary at Prairie Doodles and he was thrilled to see them. All in all a great day for everyone. Paisley will enjoy her time in the country and then she will move to Saskatoon . We miss her already

Tuesdays Pearl: Puppy play can be fun, but it may also be harmful. Theres no doubt that Covid puppies abound during this time of human distancing and long da...ys at home. Just on my small cul-de-sac, there are three puppies, ranging in age now from 14 weeks to 5 months. And through my office window, just above a general veterinary practice, Im treated to an ongoing puppy parade during curbside office hours. Its natural to seek play dates for new puppies. They are, after all, a serious handful. Believe me Ive raised many puppies, but my current boy is exhausting me and our two adult dogs multiple times per day, in spite of hikes and walks and training and more hikes and walks and training. Still, I havent arranged any play dates quite yet, and not because of vaccine concerns. In our neighborhood, dogs get regular veterinary care, puppies come from vaccinated mothers (therefore receiving temporary immunity from their mothers milk) and receive their own vaccinations on schedule. As long as companions and backyards are known, there is little reason to worry about disease. The more important reason is that puppies, like adult dogs, have widely differing styles of play. In puppy kindergartens where free play is permitted (not a great idea unless closely supervised and interrupted as needed), some puppies will be rough-and-tumble colliders and crashers, while others might be sitting under chairs, choosing to watch quietly. Many puppies are nervous and will run away, only to be tackled by the even-more-excited rough guys. A scary experience in a play group can result in long-term social anxiety. A few tips for puppy play can help avoid problems: 1. Start with one on one play. This is safest and is easiest to interrupt if needed. 2. The puppy:human ratio should be one to one. 3. Do your best to match age and size; most important, try to match style of play. Insane, 5 month old Labs are overwhelming to smaller, younger puppies. 4. Be prepared with delicious, tiny treats, a squeaky toy and tug toy or ball to distract and redirect as needed. 5. At first and until you are satisfied that the puppies do well together, keep lightweight leashes clipped to harnesses so you can easily grab and go if needed. 6. End the interaction by calling, offering or throwing food or a ball, squeaking the toy, etc. at the first sign of discomfort or fear. An uncomfortable or fearful puppy will: - Vocalize (yelp/cry) - Run away - Growl or snap 7. Similarly, avoid matching a quiet puppy with an overbearing one. An overbearing puppy will: - Chase relentlessly - Pay no attention to the other puppies vocalizations or signals - Not inhibit biting - Jump on top of the other puppy 8. Keep the sessions very brief just a minute or two, and done. They can always go in for another round. 9. At the end of the round, each human should happily clap hands and call the puppy out (a great opportunity to practice recall or targeting/touch). If all has been well, the puppies can be released to continue play. But if there has been any indication of worry, the play should end. 10. As is true with children, appropriate play should go both ways: a brief chase in one direction by puppy A, then a brief chase in the other direction by puppy B, with no crying or overbearing/smothering behavior. Remember that puppies are navigating their ways through the sensitive period for socialization, and its much better to have limited exposure than to throw them into the fray so that theyre frightened or hurt. If you have a nervous puppy, help her gain confidence by keeping a safe distance from other dogs and lavishing her with soft words, food and petting. Take the fear seriously; the most important experience is the feeling of being safe. #vetbehavior #vetbehaviordogs

Did you know that even little dogs can be reactive or dog aggressive? This little dude has some dog aggression problems and today we set a training plan in moti...on to help him gain confidence, self control and better obedience! This will help him learn to cope better with the sight of other dogs and give his owner the tools to control him better. Through counter conditioning games, better leash handling, obedience and handler focus we will have him and his owner enjoying walks soon. Training through these issues takes time and he certainly isnt perfect yet but made some great progress today! Good job Toby! Little dogs often are naturally a bit defensive because they are little! You better sound tough if you dont have the advantage of being big on your side! They learn that barking makes the scary things go away and its not long until they really over do it with barking and lunging and such. The longer your dog practices these behaviors the better at it they get! So its important to start working on it as soon as you realise its a problem!

A common question is how much exercise does a puppy need? I recommend 5 minutes per month twice a day. When they are full grown they can tolerate much more but throughout your dogs life pay attention to their cues. As with people dogs do not all have the same level of physical stamina.
