So, over the last few weeks there has been a theft problem along the Kingsway corridor. We have had reports from as close as Gilley and as far away as Boundary Road. For a lot of small business wonder these thefts have been restricted to batteries and scrap metal, for others it has been actual break-ins to their customers vehicles. Some business owners are lucky enough to have their properties fenced, which helps in minimizing these thefts, others are not as the City of Burn...aby will not allow us to erect a fence to protect our property as well as the property of our customers. So, what are we to do? Common sense would dictate, call Burnaby RCMP. They are here to serve and protect, right? Apparently not! When you call the Burnaby RCMP, they take down the information, give you a file number, but thats it. Nothing else as the thefts are not more than $5,000! This is a per incident thing, we can not band together and say there was more than $5,000 stolen. Per address! Even if you have video footage of the theft, nothing will happen. The RCMP will come, take a look at the footage, take a copy, that their report and that will be the end of that! All we want is an increased police presence in the neighbourhood, but are told it wont happen because the $5,000 mark was not hit. BUT, if you took all of us in one night, we would more than exceed that number! A lot of the people in our neighbourhood dont bother to report these incidents because they know nothing will get done. The City of Burnaby keep raising our taxes because they dont want small business in this part of Burnaby. They have told us this, they want us all out and condos in. This only makes sense from their point of view as it would generate more tax dollars for them. Some would say, we should just sell and move if we arent happy here. You are right we could sell and move elsewhere, but moving costs aside, why would we sell our properties to someone else who is just going to buy it and hold onto it until the developers come in? As business owners, we can not collect EI, nor do we get any kind of pension as many others do. But, I digress, my point is: What are we getting for our tax dollars? From where the small business owners stand: nothing! No increased police presence, nothing. But, if they need your help with something, youd best drop what you are doing and help them. Dont get me wrong, we are all aware that there are times, probably more that we imagine, that things come up that would take precedent over a quick drive by of our neighbourhood. Thats the end of my rant! Thank you for reading. See more

Over the next while we will be posting pictures of what happens when tele handler operators dont use the care they should when operating heavy equipment. In this incident the operator took the corner too quickly and rolled the machine; luckily no one was injured. This also shows the great need to be properly insured whether you own or rent your equipment.

Happy Friday, Everyone! Here are our final tele handler safety tips for the week 9) STABILITY TRIANGLE... Ensure that the combined centre of gravity of the tele handler and the load always remains within the stability triangle. Good operating habits that can helps are: - Make sure the chassis is level before handling a load and never use the sway feature with an elevated load. - Keep the boom and load as low as possible during travel. - Operate the machine at speeds that will keep the machine and load under control at all times. 10) TIPPING SAFETY Do not jump from the machine if your tele handler tips over. Remain in the cab, stay in the seat with your seatbelt fastened and brace for impact by grasping the steering wheel and leaning away from the point of impact. Keep these tips in mind and you will be able to prevent incidents from happening while operating a tele handler on any job site. Have a safe weekend!

Mocha is SUCH a good little assistant, before we left home this morning, she reminded that I had to do this post today. So here we go!! 7) PERSONNEL AND SUSPENDED LOADS Remember that there are additional restrictions placed on the operator, owner and user of the equipment when using a tele handler to lift personnel and suspend loads. Always refer to the ANSI/ATSDF B56.6 standard, OSHA Regulations, and the telehandler and attachment manufacturers instructions regarding the... additional requirements and operating instructions for these applications. 8) IN THE CAB Always wear your seatbelt while operating the telehandler. Adjust the seat and steering wheel so that you can easily reach all of the machine controls Adjust side and cab mirrors to maximize visibility. Tomorrow is Friday and will be our last instalment of Safely operating telehandlers on the job site! If you have any questions for us regarding anything about telehandlers, please feel free to contact us. Have a safe and happy day, everyone!

Here we are on day 3 of SAFELY OPERATING TELEHANDLERS ON THE JOBSITE. 5) LOAD CAPACITY CHART Do not operate a tele handler without the proper load capacity chart. It is critical that the load chart in the tele handler matches the machine and the attachment you are using before lifting the load. Load charts should always be clearly legible and visible to you while you are set up in the normal operating position.... 6) KNOW YOUR LOAD Make sure that the weight and centre of gravity of the load does not exceed the tele handlers or attachments maximum capacity according to the load chart. Evaluate the dimensions of the load to determine proper load handling techniques. Always secure the load to minimize the potential for falling debris.

Alex's Mobile HD Mechanic Ltd. & Alex's Lift Truck Service Inc. 13.12.2019

Welcome to day 2 of safely operating tele handlers on the job site. INSPECTION AND TESTS Perform a pre-operation inspection and function tests on the telehandler before each shift. If there is anything apparently wrong with the machine or a malfunction is discovered, make sure the machine is immediately tagged and removed from service until it can be repaired by a qualified service technician.... WORKPLACE HAZARD ASSESSMENT Perform a workplace hazard assessment prior to moving the telehandler to the job site. Be aware of and avoid hazards such a drop-offs and holes, slopes, slippery or unstable surfaces, overhead obstacles, power lines and any other hazards that may exist and develop a plan to avoid those hazards through all phases of machine operation. til tomorrow everyone, stay safe!
