We have received a number of questions about COVID-19 in a school setting. We have not identified a school to be a setting of COVID-19 transmission at this time. If there is no exposure risk identified to the school environment, APH does not release identifying information about a case. ... Q: If someone in my child’s school tests positive for COVID-19 do I need to get my child tested? If someone from a school setting tests positive for COVID-19 and your child is not considered a close contact, you do not need to have your child tested or keep them home from school (want to avoid confusion with the stay at home order). Algoma Public Health will reach out to parents directly if it is determined that their child is considered a close contact and provide advice on if and when testing is necessary. Q: What happens when there is an outbreak in a school? If an outbreak in a school is confirmed, Algoma Public Health staff would reach out directly to parents of close contacts to let them know and help them with the next steps which include staying home, monitoring for symptoms and present for testing when it’s appropriate. APH would continue to investigate to determine any other close contacts and monitor the situation until an outbreak can be declared over, including if a classroom and or the entire school would need to be closed.

We have been receiving lots of calls about individual organizations publicly releasing information about positive cases. Individual organizations may decide on their own to disclose to the public with regards to people who test positive for COVID-19, who happen to be employees of their workplace (e.g. Tim Horton’s, Shoppers Drug Mart). Our communities continue to be challenged with COVID-19 but everyday there are examples of the people of Algoma offering support to those who need it. While they may have been strangers, Ms. Marwah supported another family during their 14 day-quarantine. Her actions answered the needs of a family and promoted the compassionate spirit that is needed during difficult times. This act does more than making 14 days go by easier, they instill a feeling that someone is not alone. Self-isolation is important in limiting the spread of COVID-19 and there may be several individuals isolating in the coming days due to possible exposures. This can be very challenging for some and they may need support. Check in with them and let them know they are not alone. #BeKindAlgoma

Today, the province of Ontario announced 2,290 new cases of COVID-19. In Canada, the most recent daily update has just over 7,000 new cases. The virus is circulating and people are travelling. Even though there have been few "Algoma" cases recently, our residents continue to be impacted by exposures to the virus. Exposures can happen when Algoma residents travel outside of Algoma, for essential work or other reasons, and come into close contact with others while travellin...g. Exposures can also happen when visitors from other areas come to Algoma, and have close contact with residents here. A person with COVID-19 can spread the virus to others 48 hours before they feel sick. We need to act like every person we come into contact with has the virus. We understand the holiday season is a time we spend with family and friends. The safest way to celebrate this year is with the people you live with and celebrate virtually with everyone else. If you live alone, celebrate with one other household. With an approved vaccine, we have much to look forward to in 2021. But for now, let's continue to protect ourselves and our community and break the chain of transmission: Stay home if you're sick Keep two metres distance from people you don’t live with Avoid non-essential travel Wash your hands frequently Wear your face covering Remember to practise kindness
