Arguably the most delicate bones in equine anatomy- the Hyoid Apparatus! These bones provide anchorage for the horse’s tongue and larynx. And the musculature t...hat inserts onto them have a huge role to play in moving the tongue, forelimb protraction and scapulae ROM. Poorly fitted bridles- specifically tight nose bands and incorrect bitting, or restricted head/neck movement caused by bad hands or training aids will directly inhibit hyoid apparatus function, therefore affecting how your horse moves. Symptoms of hyoid discomfort (which go hand-in-hand with TMJ tension) include; fussing with the mouth, drawing the tongue back, head shaking, unequal forelimb protraction and restricted shoulder movement to name but a few. Breakage of these bones can cause partial, or total tongue paralysis. With this in mind, it’s quite logical to say that if these tissues are compromised then the horse’s whole musculoskeletal system will be compromised too.

Thank you so much for all the hundreds of friend requests and hundreds of messages...I am trying to respond to as many as I can, but with a demanding full time ...job, 2 horses at home, 5 dogs, 2 cats and a farm to keep up with, I created a FB page just for Apollo called Apollo and the story of his bones. Please feel free to comment and ask questions there, since I am documenting our journey there together in more detail with photos and videos and with descriptions of his behavior issues. https://www.facebook.com/apollosbones/ Edit...due to some messages sent to me, yes of course Apollo had been x-rayed...and scoped, and tested for every possible thing. I did not want him to be dug up because I thought it would be fun, but when the opportunity presented itself and when I thought I could perhaps get some answers, I thought it was a great thing to do. He also had regular chiropractic care, excellent farrier and a wonderful veterinarian. Believe me, when I made this extremely painful and heart breaking decision to let him go, it was only so I could make sure he would not be in pain anymore and that he would never end up in the wrong hands... I am in the process to create Apollo's own FB page, I so appreciate all the messages I have received and permission to share his story, so I will try to re-create our journey there... So. I got to visit Apollo's bones today...and all that knew him certainly knew how difficult and sometimes dangerous he could be. Well his bones certainly told a story. A story of fused bones, bad kissing spine, abnormality in his front feet, and a very strange hole in his skull. Pamela Blades Eckelbarger will document, photograph and write in detail about him when she is settled back in SC. But here are some of the stuff I got to see today. And considering how bad some of his bones were, it was a miracle he was as "good" as he was. It was great closure for me, knowing I did the absolute best when I put him down and let him go...all his bad behavior came from pain, and a lot of it. He was not a bad horse, he just never had a chance to be anything else. I can't thank Pam enough for doing this, and Apollo will travel back with her to SC where his bones will help to educate others. Description in comments, I hope I got it right...
