Today marks the United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, and to recognize the date, we want to pull back the curtain on what we’re seeing here i...n Saskatoon, and the great work not only being done by our VICE unit, but other community organizations, to keep people safe from this crime. Nearly every country in the world is affected by trafficking, and unfortunately it is present in our community, too. It can be referred to as modern day slavery, and involves the recruiting, transporting, transferring, receiving, holding, concealing or harbouring, OR the exercise of control, direction or influence over the movements of a person in order to exploit or facilitate the exploitation of that person. Here are some of the facts: -While anyone can be a victim, victims disproportionately tend to come from vulnerable or marginalized populations. -In Canada, 97% of police-reported incidents involve women and girls. -While there are varying means of control, predators exploit existing vulnerabilities and exercise control through emotional or psychological means. One common way in which predators lure their victims is to position themselves as trustworthy (either through false promises or a romantic interest). -90% of victims in Canada knew their accused (in incidents that happened 2009-2018). -The most common form of exploitation reported to and detected by police is sexual exploitation. In addition to investigating these types of crimes, the SPS VICE Unit works to connect victims with resources in the community, including Hope Restored and EGADZ. These resources are not only a critical component in assisting victims / survivors in exiting their situation, but they are also a crucial element in ensuring thorough investigations can be completed. Hope Restored Canada offers a unique trauma-informed life skills program, providing support to women who have experience sexual exploitation and trafficking or who are at risk of being exploited. The objective of this program is to address the profound recovery needs that sexually exploited, and trafficked youth and women have as they exit their lives of abuse. To learn more about Hope Restored and the work they do, visit: hoperestoredcanada.org. EGADZ Drop In Centre is another organization that works closely with Police to assist vulnerable people. Through their Street Outreach Program, they offer support and services to those being exploited and youth facing challenging times. This mobile unit which operates seven days a week carries diapers, formula and printed information, and also offers rides to those in emergency situations. Finally, The Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking offers 24/7 support through the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline to connect victims and survivors with social services, law enforcement and emergency services. Those also receive tips which can be submitted online at canadianhumantraffickinghotline.ca or by calling 1-833-900-1010. Through the work of those on the front line, we work to ensure that no person in our community becomes a victim to trafficking.

When everything around you seems to be spinning and you can’t get in the wheel, remember to stop, take time to breath, listen to your body and figure out what you really want. . . . #tuesdaythoughts #tuesdaymood #dietitian #nutritioncounseling #mompreneur #rd #learningtogrow #stepaway #listentoyourbody #listentoyourheart #mentalwellness
