This weekend we welcomed the Rook family into the Orthodox Church. Many years to the newly baptised Athanasius, Nino and Gabriel, and the newly chrismated Michelle! (Pictured: family icons waiting to be blessed prior to the service.)

Our parish began a series of guest speakers on parish development today by welcoming our first guest, Fr. J. Sergius Halvorsen, to speak on the topic of Christian education. Thank you for joining us Fr. Sergius, and special thanks to the St. Tikhon's Archdiocesan Stewards for making this project possible.

Today is the feast day for St. Herman of Alaska, who is one of our temple's patron saints. To mark the occasion, kids can bake and decorate spruce tree cookies (as St. Herman lived on Spruce Island). A lenten recipe can be found in "When You Fast" by Catherine Mandell (SVS Press). A story of St. Herman's remarkable life can be found here: https://www.oca.org/fs/st-herman-of-alaska

All Saints of Alaska, pray to God for us! Sing praises to our king! Sing praises! Rejoice and give glory! Christ has shone forth in Alaska and our nations receive the blessing. The wonderworking love of Herman; the inspired labours of Innocent; the martyrdom of Juvenaly and the mission of Jacob; and Peter the Aleut's fearlessness and faith. These are the Northern Lights which call us heavenward! These are the clarions of the Cross. O Saints of God, pray that we may answer: "We are ready, O God, we are ready!" And that our souls may be saved. (Troparion for All Saints of Alaska)

The smoke from the fires our neighbours in Washington state are fighting has drifted up to Elk Lake, as you can see from the view at church. Lord have mercy on those who have lost lives and homes, and on those fighting the fires! https://www.oca.org//statement-of-archbishop-benjamin-on-w

Neither the tomb, nor death, could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life, by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb. (Kontakion of the Feast)
