Not long before the weekend we received a call from a mortgage advisor in Vancouver looking for a mobile lawyer to assist their client in Richmond with a refinancing. The client was employed, but had recently been injured, and then had a medical condition worsen leaving them bed bound, immobile, and unable to work. Factor in the impact of the COVID situation, and the family fell into financial difficulty and needed to consolidate their debts. Unfortunately, the mortgage advis...or was unable to find any lawyer or notary nearby to assist their client by visiting them at their home, thus their closing date was pushed back, and so the mortgage advisor reached out to us all the way in Chilliwack. We asked the client if Saturday would work as we are available on Saturdays until 2:00 PM, and would be near Richmond anyways on that day, so it would save them money on the house visit fee. In addition, if we can get everything done on Saturday and ready for Monday, we can close that much earlier and save them the extra interest and per diems on their debts that would have otherwise accrued. They were definitely very pleased that we were able to assist them, and save them money too. To go that extra mile is what makes all the difference!

I'd like to share this Google review I recently received from the family of a very satisfied client. I was approached to deal with some last second estate planning needs which were very important to a client who was in the hospital. During this time it's obviously difficult to find someone who can help, let alone when the client is in the hospital. The matter also had a few wrinkles that needed to be dealt with quickly. I enjoy taking on these files as it means the client has the weight of their estate planning lifted off their shoulders and know their loved ones will be taken care of after death. Through some quick acting I was able to resolve all the issues in a cost effective and tax efficient manner. The client also enjoyed laughing at my jokes which is a plus since my "dad jokes" are admittedly pretty corny.

I often get asked, "What's the difference between a Lawyer and a Notary?". For now I feel like I should make this post to at least highlight key differences with a focus on real estate: 1. Lawyers have more education and training. Lawyers are better equipped to deal with any complications that may arise in a real estate transaction, and, Lawyers are able to give legal advice, unlike Notaries who are not allowed to give legal advice. As a Lawyer, I assist my Realtor partners a...nd advise them on legal issues as part of our relationship. This is particularly valuable in a transaction involving a family or estate dispute, as Notaries do not have training in these areas. 2. Lawyers are not more expensive than Notaries. Lawyers who practice in conveyancing are competitively priced in comparison to Notaries and sometimes cheaper. Here in Chilliwack, based on my recent pricing survey, my firm and another law firm charge less than the leading Notaries. If you have a Notary you enjoy working with, that's fine, but there are misconceptions that only Notaries can perform real estate transactions, that they can provide legal advice, and that they are more affordable. I'll be creating some materials to distribute to my friends in the real estate industry on this soon.
