Name that truck!
When Alpine began, the rituals of "après-ski," the silly hats and crazy antics, the dress-up parties, the themed events, had always been part of the folklore of modern skiing, and Alpine was quick to make these off-the-hill joys available to its members. What started as "work parties" became the great social events we know and love today like Festival Day and the Dummy Downhill. In the first year of operation at Alpine, someone came up with "Fancy Hat Saturday", and in 1965 was the first Festival Day. Off-hill, they did their après-ski socializing in local restaurants and in the chalets that club members had begun building around the edges of the property. Doris Smith, one of the founding members, remarked: All you needed was a picnic table, a guitar, a wineskin, and you had a party. #alpine60

By December 7, 1960 with opening day three weeks away, teams of volunteers were still frantically at work, preparing the hill. The installation of the rope tow was held up by contractors when members stepped in and offered to build the tow hut themselves. With three runs roughed in; Challenge, the Link and ABC (though some stumps still dotted the hill), the rope tow was found to be in working order and ready to accept skiers. There was no clubhouse, not even a washroom, membe...rs could ski over to Arrowhead Ranch to warm up but other than that the only refuge from bad weather were the cars in the parking lot. Crests were to be 'sewn on the right shoulder' to act as your lift ticket or badge. Now decades on, Alpine has gone from rope tows and T-bars to high-speed six-packs, from 3 runs to 36, but that spirit of joy, energy and determination that defined those early years is still very much with us. Credit to Paul Wilson & Patricia Grant for their words in The Alpine Story, our 50th anniversary book. If you don't have a copy, you can pick one up at the Club this season. Thank you to a number of members for images including Ian Wolfe, Lynda Torneck, Linda Leistner to name a few. #alpine60

In the fall of 1960, volunteer work parties would travel to Collingwood every Sunday to help develop the newly purchased property. In order to get as many hands as possible a plea in the Skidoodle wrote: "Work Party: or, An Ode to Young Hopefuls - Enjoy the beauty of Ontario Northlands! Revel in the sparkling air of Georgian Bay... blowing fresh, and invigoratingly over the scenic Blue Mountains. Sun bathe, ride horses, bring a picnic lunch stay for the weekend. And, be sure to bring along a saw, an axe, a pick, or a shovel, Because we are going to clear your Hill of unwanted trees and bush And WE NEED YOUR HELP! For those interested in staying overnight at the lodge the cost will be approximately $3.00 or $4.00 for a room. Meals extra. An item of interest for those who can make it for the weekend we hope to have a party on the Saturday night. Your executive. #alpine60 #thealpinestory #throwbackthursday

On this day 60 years ago, the Alpine property was purchased. After a few years as a travelling ski club, Alpine's founding members concluded that they needed a hill to call their own. The Alpine property was originally a dude ranch called Arrowhead Ranch and around 50 acres of this property was purchased for $10,000 with the deal closing on September 30, 1960. Member volunteers cleared the hill by hand, starting with Challenge, the Link, and ABC runs. Shortly after, a rope tow was installed to get our club up the hill and off the ground. The Club eventually purchased more acreage expanding our home to what it is today. #alpine60
Alpine Ski Club is 60! Alpine began in 1957 when a group of young ski enthusiasts started a travelling ski club. By 1960, they had purchased the property that we now call home and cleared the runs with their own hands. Follow along this season as we celebrate this milestone and our incredible heritage. We invite you to share your Alpine memories with us by using the hashtag #alpine60

We’re busy getting ready to welcome you back on opening day, here is another quick breakdown of what our operations team is working on this summer: The yellow equipment you see pictured are the valves for The Steeps’ automated snowmaking. Each one of these has the ability to automatically turn on a different snow gun by computer. Each summer, these valves must be thoroughly inspected as they are hugely important pieces of the snowmaking puzzle, here’s why: For our manual snow... guns, our snowmaking team has to go out in the harsh winter conditions to turn on the guns, which can be a tedious process. This automation is much more efficient as it allows us to take advantage of temperature differences and also start up quicker and run longer when it warms up. It will also regulate the water flow to each gun based on the temperature outside, sending more water when the temperature is cooler and less water when the temperature is warmer. This outside temperature is referred to as ‘wet bulb temperature’. This takes into account the air temperature and relative humidity, as snowmaking is much easier when the humidity level is low. The wet bulb temperature is always lower than the outside temperature. This is only a very small part of the complicated and important process of making snow! #alpineskiclub See more
Keeping Alpine running is a year-round endeavor and our staff are hard at work getting us ready to re-open this winter. You might think things quiet down here in the hot, summer months but our operations team are as busy in the off-season as they are in the winter. Here is a quick education on some projects our team is working on: As skiers and snowboarders, we cherish chairlifts in order to access our winter passion but often the intricacies of these magnificent machines ar...e overlooked. When the lifts stop turning on closing day they don’t just sit idly all summer, in fact that is when the work begins. Alpine has two types of chairs; fixed grip and detachable grip (high speed). Fixed grip lifts can run up to 450 ft/minute, while detachable grip lifts can run up to 1,000 ft/minute. Every summer the lifts team takes the chairs off the lift one by one. The grips are then removed and collected for testing. By law, 20% of these grips must be checked annually, Alpine checks 33% of our detachable grips. This ensures that each gets checked once every 3 years. Each grip is given what is called ‘non-destructive testing’, which includes the use of black lights, ultrasounds and magnets to search for any cracks or imperfections. Once all of these grips have passed the test the chairs are ready to get placed back on the line and we are one step closer to opening day! Stay tuned for another operations update next week. Pictured are the chairs, grips and Mark D., Alpine’s lift mechanic working his magic. Once you take your first ride up a lift your life will be changed forever Warren Miller.
Happy Father’s Day to all of our ski and snowboard dads. Thanks for memories like these... I’ve been a member of Alpine my entire life. My dad was one of founding members. In the early years, he with a group of friends spent their weekends at Alpine clearing trees, recruiting new members, and most importantly, socializing. Looking at the photos from the early 1960s through the 1980s, it is clear that the family spirit of Alpine has been constant from its inception. In spit...e of all the changes that I have seen at Alpine in over 40 years, in the most important ways, it is the same place where I grew up. There are several vivid memories that immediately come to mind. Sitting on the rooftop deck after a full day of skiing with my dad in the 1970s. The feeling of freedom and independence of skiing all day with my brothers away from the watchful eyes of my parents is, the same feeling hundreds of kids still feel every weekend. Hearing AM radio played by the lifties on the North (now Millennium) chair which to this day when I hear a Billy Joel song brings me right back to that lift line. More recently, every weekend morning when my son meets up with his race team, it is near the same spot where my wife and I were married on the deck of the old chalet. I feel proud and privileged to be a life-long, three-generation member of the Alpine family with a strong connection its history and heritage. Pick up a Dockside Magazine today to catch their article on Alpine and the strong community we have built over the last 60 years as a club. The efforts of those first members created some fabulous ski runs. But more than that, they also helped set the tone of the club as a place where people get involved, support each other, and participate Because club members are surrounded by people who share their passion and who see each other nearly every week as they coach, volu...nteer, and ski with their families there is an abiding sense of community.
