A Message from Dio: "Join us to learn about the gospel and then read it throughout the season of Epiphany to come to a deeper appreciation of the text and hear it speak to your lives in new ways."

Mirabai Starr writes incarnation, as taught by the medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen (10981179): Hildegard of Bingen . . . showed [Mother Earth] to us through the church-approved lens of Mother Mary and Mother Sophia. . . . According to Hildegard, it is Mary who spins earthly matter into being and weaves it together with the heavens so that all of creation is interpenetrated with the sacred. In Hildegard’s theology, Mary merges with Sophia, Mother Wisdom, who dips one wing... to earth while the other soars to heaven and, in her ecstatic flight, quickens life. . . Hildegard was smitten with the creator and enamored by every element of creation. Her mysticism is intimateerotic, even. She coined the term viriditas to evoke the lush, extravagant, moist, and verdant quality of the Divine, manifesting as the greening power that permeates all that is [i.e., the spirit within all matter]. This life-giving energy is imbued with a distinctly feminine quality. The earth is at the same time mother, she is mother of all that is natural, mother of all that is human. She is the mother of all, for contained in her are the seeds of all. [3] For Hildegard, the Son may be the incarnation of the Holy One, but the Mother forms the very stuff from which the Word of God issues forth into the world. The mystical heart of all the world’s religions affirms the profoundly feminine understanding of panentheism: that is, all the particles of the universe are infused with the substance of the Divine; God both interpenetrates the universe and is greater than all that is. As we think about what our Diocese may look like after the pandemic, we need to be praying for God’s will in all of this. What kind of church does God want us to be? We cannot let our fears control our prayers and our imaginations for how God’s power can work in us. Nor can we allow petty jealousies or feelings of superiority or individuality to keep us playing a spiritual version of the game Survivor. As you consider the future of your congregation, invite Jesus to be in cha...rge, to direct your ministries, to make you stop some things and take up others, to be Lord of this place and this time and to make you disciples for such a time as this. Agree to step out in faith into the unknown. I believe that the Holy Spirit is calling us to pray for one another and for those outside our circles and comfort zones. We are to be working as the friends and servants of Jesus, on the lookout for where we find him and figuring out how we can serve Him and share his love and grace with the people we meet and with one another. This may also involve our repenting of the ways we have judged others in our Diocese. Too often we get caught up with housekeeping concerns, with our consumer mentality that wants things our own way and on our own time schedule. Life in this time of pandemic has been a difficult school for many of us, and yet God has clearly been at work in our Diocese and has been moving us out of our comfort zones.

In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up,... every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 40 See more
