AVP will be closed for the winter holiday from Dec21st to Jan 4th. This winter holiday is in many ways going to be different but hopefully, we can all find ways to make it a positive and if it does not feel positive that is okay too, hoping for a better 2021

Tomorrow, UVic will be observing National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Classes will be cancelled from 11:30am to 12:30pm. AVP has collaborated with UVic in past years on events to mark this day, and this year we are encouraging folks to take some time to reflect on the intersections of violence and oppression and commit to taking action in the future. UVic has put together a Reflective Conversation Guide, which can be found at https://www.uvic.ca/...equity/education/events/ and used to prompt thoughts or discussions on this subject tomorrow or in the future. It's important to remember that gender-based violence doesn't just affect cisgender women---it can define the ways in which trans women, gender non-conforming and non-binary folks, Indigenous Two-Spirit folks, and people of other marginalized genders exist in the world. This day is for anyone who has experienced marginalization, violence, or oppression due to their gender, gender identity, or expression. We are here for you---while we do not have support phone hours on Fridays, there are a number of other phone lines that are available 24/7 for you to call if you feel impacted by violence in any way. You can find a full list of support phone lines and organizations at https://www.antiviolenceproject.org/resources/links/

Can you help us improve support services for survivors of sexualized and gender based violence in our community? Following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, AVP started working remotely and has continued to provide support to survivors and those impacted by sexualized and gender-based violence over the phone and email. We also recently added the option to access support over video conferencing. Since we started providing support services remotely we noted a decline in the n...umber of requests for support we have received. In responding to this, we are putting out a short survey to try to understand what kind of barriers folks may be experiencing when accessing support remotely or during this pandemic. Please take the survey to help us understand what is working and what is not working about Anti-violence project’s remote support service and what we can do better to make remote support accessible to folks in our community experiencing sexualized and gender based violence. In this survey we are not asking you to share any personal/identifying information unless you choose to share with us. Link to the survey is here: https://www.antiviolenceproject.org//remote-support-survey/ [Image description: white background with fine black floral illustration overlaid with bold yellow rectangles: text AVP Survey; side-Help Us Improve; other side-Remote support with link on bottom]

The last Supporting a Survivor Workshop for this term will be on Monday. Register today to save your spot! Online via Zoom Receiving a disclosure can feel intimidating if you don’t know how best to respond, which is why the Anti-Violence Project has designed this workshop to address how we can all support the survivors in our lives. Throughout the workshop we will cover the very important differences between support, disclosure and reporting and provide some foundations ...for supporting survivors of sexualized violence. We will discuss different approaches and tools that can be used when supporting someone, including: active listening, believing survivors, busting myths, showing empathy and making referrals. While the focus of this online workshop is supporting survivors of sexualized violence, many of the topics and skills we cover will be applicable to support in other contexts. These free workshops are an hour and a half long and have a no late-comer policy. Open to students, staff, and faculty as well as community members! Attend an AVP workshop this semester to get entered to win a draw for a $100 gift card and students can receive co-curricular credit [Image description: Sage green background with pink brush dabs in shape of flower head as well as dark blue, yellow and white brush strokes.
