Instead of calling 811, people can now do the self-assessment online at https://covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca. It will reduce the wait time to be screened... for testing from 12 hours to about 10 minutes. If the assessment determines that a person requires a test, the Nova Scotia Health Authority or IWK Health Centre will call within 24 to 48 hours to book an appointment. 811 will continue to take calls from people who cannot access the online tool or who wish to speak with a nurse about their symptoms.

Have you been to visit the Antigonish Community Dog Park yet? It is located at Columbus Field in our beautiful downtown. We want everyone to be able to enjoy t...he park so local expert Evan Doggett with Doggett Style Dog Training went over the rules and best practices so that you and your dog can use the park safely! Follow Evan for more dog training tips and watch the video he filmed here: https://youtu.be/FE8un3bMQYc. If you're driving to use the Dog Park, please park your car at the St. Andrews Street gravel parking lot, not the Club 60 parking lot. Today, is Orange Shirt Day in Canada. Each year, on September 30th, we as Canadians come together to remember the brutal and horrifying part of Canada’s history that affected Indigenous children when they were sent away to residential schools. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’s account of losing her shiny new orange shirt on her first day of schoo...l at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because children are back in school and teachers have time to plan, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the year. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and community agencies to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on. It is important to honour these children, and show a collective commitment to standing with the survivors. We're participating in Orange Shirt Day because #EveryChildMatters.

Below is a message sent to the StFX community earlier today by President, Dr. Andy Hakin: SUBJECT LINE: UPDATE TO MASK WEARING ON CAMPUS To the StFX Campus Com...munity, Thursday will mark the completion of the first month of our new academic term as we turn the page on September and begin October. As I have communicated in previous updates, we have had a very successful return to campus so far. Once again, I want to thank and congratulate the entire StFX and Antigonish community for your continued efforts and support. We haven’t been perfect; however, our months of planning coupled with the support students have received have clearly put us in a strong position. We can do this. We are doing this. The most recent announcement from Public Health has introduced an opportunity for us to reflect on some of our own internal policies. To remind you, last week Public Health announced that as of October 1, organized sports can now proceed up to a maximum of 50, non-socially- distanced participants. This is terrific news as the province slowly advances toward safely reopening some sectors of our communities. For example, this news brings with it the fact that our sports facilities now have new, expanded parameters for our varsity and recreational student-athletes, as well as for community organizations to embrace -- our facilities will be permitted to host organized sports that have up to a maximum of 50 participants without masks. Our Ancillary and Athletics and Recreation teams have been working with Risk Management, and we are ready. Related to our internal policies, since the beginning of the academic year we thought it important that StFX set the bar high for the safety of our community, and mandate that masks be worn at all times while on campus, indoors and outdoors. We felt it necessary to start the year on strong footing, introducing a mask policy that is more stringent than what Public Health mandated across the province. I’m pleased to report that, to date, we have had nearly 100% compliance a fantastic result. Thank you. We are now comfortable relaxing our StFX mask policy, bringing our internal protocols to match those of Public Health as it relates to wearing masks outdoors: beginning October 1, masks will not be required outdoors across the campus when appropriate social distancing is maintained. Of course, where physical distancing cannot be maintained outdoors, masks will be required. Again, this brings our mask policy in line with that of Public Health and the wearing of masks in outdoor spaces. Academic classes of less than 50 students that include physically strenuous activity or outdoor activity will no longer require masks. This change will apply directly to HKIN skills courses or outdoor courses in education and other disciplines. Students taking indoor skills classes will not be required to wear masks while performing the physical aspects of the skills, but will be required to put a mask on during lecture-style or non-physically active parts of the class. Having said this, I do want to make it clear that the university may revert to a mandatory mask-wearing policy that includes wearing a mask at all times, indoors and outdoors, should an outbreak occur. We are able to take this small step together because of our collaborative efforts. We are doing very well and now is not a time to be complacent. Please continue to use good judgement when it comes to social distancing and limiting gatherings to small groups. Please continue to be diligent, wear your mask and wash your hands regularly. Let’s continue to practice low-risk behaviours and ensure we continue to keep ourselves and our community safe. By doing so, we are able to stay together, face-to-face, here in Antigonish. I am so very proud to be part of this community. Andy Andy W. Hakin PhD President and Vice-Chancellor St Francis Xavier University PO BOX 5000 Antigonish NS | Canada | B2G 2W5 t. 902 867 2188 | e. We wish to advise residents to prepare for the severe storm that is approaching Nova Scotia this week. Nova Scotia is currently under a Post Tropical Storm Warning from Hurricane Teddy. Current weather predictions are showing that Antigonish will be impacted by rain and high winds from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Significant rainfall is expected (between 50-100mm) and will accumulate quickly, and wind gusts are expected reach up to 80-120 km/hr, possibly higher. To pr...epare, residents should secure outdoor furniture, flowerpots, trampolines and garbage bins, as well as ensure windows are closed and basements and backdoors are properly secured. Charge your devices, have flashlights on hand and extra batteries. Make sure you have enough food and water for 72 hours. Please check on your neighbors and stay safe!

Hurricane Season is officially upon us and meteorologists are tracking Hurricane Teddy which could potentially make landfall in Nova Scotia on Wednesday of next week. Please make sure you have your 72 hour kit prepared and stay up to date with the course of the storm. Here are some tips to help you prepare an emergency kit: Your emergency kit should have everything you need to keep you and your family sustained for at least 72 hours. The kit should be easy to carry and should... be checked twice a year. Your kit may include, but is not limited to: Water for at least two litres per person per day Non-perishable foods such as canned food (with a manual can opener) and dried food. First aid supplies. Wind-up or battery-powered flashlight and radio (with batteries if applicable). Non-emergency tips: Make sure devices are charged and have some shows, games, books or movies downloaded. Dust off your board games, decks of cards and crib boards and don't forget your storm chips!
