Did your new home come with appliances and you want to know how old they are? Appliance serial numbers are not random; contained within is a format indicating the year and month of manufacture. You can use this handy tool to backdate your appliance!

We received a lot of positive feedback from our last post detailing some of the tools we use so we thought we'd share more! Many front load washers have an access panel for the drain filter. It's important to inspect and clean this filter and housing on a regular basis (about every 1-2 months). The first step is to remove the cap from the hose and drain the water. This tends to be a tedious process as you would require a shallow tray which you would need to very carefully car...ry over to the sink to empty. Then you will be able to unscrew the filter itself. Never unscrew the filter first unless you want a bunch of foul smelling water all over your floor. There is always water in this filter and it is perfectly normal. There is no need to drain it after every cycle. Instead of a tray we use this Stanley 1 gallon wet/dry vac. It's the smallest and cheapest wet/dry vac you can buy and it's available online at Walmart for $30. It has one design flaw: the foam filter slips upwards which results in water blowing out the top of the vacuum. We put zipties (from Dollarama) to secure it at the bottom. This makes draining the filter much easier. And the easier something is to do the more likely you are to do it!

More than a few customers have noticed and inquired about this particular tool so we'd thought we'd share it here! These are inflatable airbag shims made by Danish company Winbag. They can lift 300lbs and are great for lifting and adjusting fridges, washers, dryers, etc.... They allow us to precisely level appliances, lift appliances, and also useful to push objects into place. Our technicians are pretty strong people but no one can lift a fully loaded fridge or stacked washer and dryer on their own. You can find them at Home Depot for about $23 and on Amazon for about $33. Many customers who are seniors or mobility issues ask us about these on our calls! Also if you ever get locked out of your car this is what CAA uses to shim the upper half of the door open to slip the slimjim inside. It's kinda scary how easy and fast it is to break into a car!
