It's a wheat head and leaf! Our September Artifact of the Month showcases a moulded Wheat Pattern design that was very popular on Ironstone from the mid-1800searly 20th century. Many different versions of the pattern were produced my many potters. This specific pattern was called Arched Wheat and was made by the American potter R. Cochran and Co. during the midlate 1800s. #Artifact #ARAHeritage #OntarioArchaeology

Did you guess salt glazed stoneware? Our Artifact of the Month is a salt glazed stoneware fragment that represents the Brantford pottery factory established in 1849 by Justus Morton. The factory was first built at the corner of Dalhousie and Clarence Streets in Brantford, Ontario. It was one of the oldest stoneware producers in Canada West and one of the largest pottery-manufacturing operations in Canada. The company continued until 1907. #Artifact #ARAHeritage #OntarioArchaeology

Though its predecessors have roots as far back as 3000 years, the pocket-sized harmonica we recognize today was invented in Germany in the early 1820’s. This cheap, small, and easy to play instrument quickly gained popularity across Europe and North America and is a common find on mid to late 19th century sites in Ontario. Thin brass strips, called reeds, are attached to a reed plate (pictured here) and vibrate when air is inhaled or exhaled through the harmonica body. Different notes and pitches are produced by a combination of slot sizes in the reed plate, reed length and vibration frequency. #MusicalHistory #Artifact #ARAHeritage #OntarioArchaeology

Though these may appear to be beads at first glace, February’s artifact of the month is NOT an artifact! The fossilized stalks of crinoids, an early species that once dominated the ocean floors, frequently break into disc-shaped segments, often leading to a mistaken identity! Though there are examples of these being collected and used as beads, with a closer look through a microscope, we can see there is no evidence of use-wear on these particular fossils. #Artifact #ARAHeritage #OntarioArchaeology #ArtifactoftheMonth

The Dr. is in! Or is that druggist? Dr. Issac Thomspon, who was not a doctor but a druggist, invented Dr. Thompson’s Eye Water in 1795. This cure-all was touted for its ability to ease all afflictions of the eye, except blindness. It was widely used until its ingredients were exposed after the US Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 forced the ingredient list to be published. Dangerous ingredients included opium, alcohol, copper sulphates and zinc sulphates This quickly led to a decline in sales and eventual stoppage in 1939. #Artifact #ARAHeritage #OntarioArchaeology #ArtifactoftheMonth

Our #ArtifactoftheMonth for September is a chilling one. Frozen Charlotte dolls originated from an old folk tale about a young woman who froze to death due to her vanity. They originated from Germany and were called Penny Dolls. These dolls were popular from the mid-1800s to the early 20th century and often came in caskets or were gifted in baked cakes to bring good luck or special favour on the gifted person. #Artifact #ARAHeritage #archaeology #ontarioarchaeology

What better time to celebrate bright colours than in the heat of the summer? Our August #ArtifactoftheMonth is touted as America’s favourite dinnerware. Known as Fiesta ware, it was first showcased in 1936 and is known best for its often-bright colour palette. Fiesta wares were retired in 1972 but soon became popular again with collectors. This popularity encouraged Bloomingdale’s to approach the Homer Laughlin company and persuade them to reproduce the ware. This happened in 1986 and the dinnerware is still produced today! #Artifact #ARAHeritage #archaeology #ontarioarchaeology

Our July #ArtifactoftheMonth is this large collection of glass. You may not realize it, but glass can tell us so much about an archaeological site. Identifying the method by which the glass was made can help us date the site, while the types of glass found can help us determine lifestyle of the people that lived there. #Artifact #ARAHeritage #archaeology #ontarioarchaeology
