We are sorry to hear about the passing of Paul Lennox. Paul contributed a great deal to our knowledge about Ontario archaeology, and we have several of the collections that he worked on at the museum. We wish his family and friends all the best during this difficult time.

Day 25 of #Museum30 and today our prompt is #Statue! We recently featured this statue of a ceramic dog's head as part of our #ArtifactSpotlight. This surviving ceramic dog’s alert expression would have been hand-painted. Much of the paint has worn off, but you can still see the brown remnants of it. This artifact may be small, but fully in-tact mantle dogs like this are still popular collectibles today!... . . . #MOALondon #LdnMuse #LdnOnt #Archaeology #History #Artifact #Heritage See more

Glass trade beads like this one were exchanged by Europeans for goods and services in Africa, South America and North America between the 16th and 20th centuries. The chevron style of this bead suggests it was manufactured in Venice; a major source of the beads used in fur trade. At the height of the demand, Venetian bead factory furnaces never stopped burning, even at night. Glass beads were highly sought after by Indigenous people, because they were a novelty that had not b...een seen before settler contact. However, Indigenous cultures made and used beads for thousands of years prior. Learn more about trade beads and other Indigenous artifacts on our Google Arts and Culture page. Pearlware was invented in the mid-1770s to keep middle class ceramics competitive with the porcelain market. Potters tried to recreate the look of Chinese and Japanese porcelain by adding a small amount of cobalt oxide to the glaze, creating a bluish tint. Porcelain imported from East Asia was considered to be higher quality and more aesthetically pleasing than European tableware. But imported porcelain was far too expensive for most, so European manufacturers began imitating... the style of Chinese porcelain to meet demand. By the 19th century European ceramics were mass produced, making them available to a much larger market at an affordable price. Despite its initial boom in popularity, pearlware eventually became unfashionable and was replaced by ironstone and refined white earthenware. This fragmented bottle contained a medicine called Turlington’s Balsam of Life. Creator Robert Turlington claimed that the substance was a remedy for many of ailments, from kidney stones, to paralysis. To prevent counterfeit versions of his medicine being sold, Turlington designed this unique bottle shape, making his Balsam of Life one of the most recognizable and popular patented medicines of the 19th century. This bottle was found during an excavation at the William Joyc...e site in Halton Hills. Learn more about this bottle and other artifacts on our Google Arts and Culture page. This ceramic dog’s head is a part of a fireplace dog figurine, popularized in the mid-to-late 19th century. They were mass produced in Staffordshire, England and often sold in affordable pairs to working class families. Although much of the paint has worn off, you can still see the brown remnants of it. Because these figures were all hand painted, each dog had a unique expressionsome are happy, focused or even angry! They are still popular collectibles today.... Our #FeaturedArtifact for the week also happens to be a #FaveouriteArchaeologyTool! This artifact is an incomplete iron spade found in Halton Hills, Ontario, by Archaeological Services Inc., in 2007. Between 1836 and 1848 a farm stood on this land where this spade was found! Several other agricultural items were also unearthed on the site including: the blade of a hoe, two shovel fragments and three scythes blades. However, shovels are not only used for agricultural purpose...s, but they are also part of the archaeologist’s tool kit. This shovel was therefore found by another shovel: history comes full circle! . . . #IAD2020 #MOALondon #LdnMuse #Collections #MOACollections #MuseumsFromHome #Artifacts #Archaeology #LdnOnt
