With the new lockdown measures announced today, we are still so very, very much closed. So closed. We tried to put Kevin out on the sidewalk for curb side pickup home haircuts, but that got shut down pretty quickly. Still not totally sure who was most upset with us, Public Health, the Ministry of Labour, or Kevin’s mother. Either way, no real changes here. But with that said, our amazing neighbour Kate at @gather.floral.events is most definitely open! If you haven’t met Kate yet, you must (from 6ft!). She’s wonderful, and so is her shop. She is not only open for curb side pickup, but is also doing FREE DELIVERY during the lockdown. It’s not just beautiful bouquets of flowers available, but also wellness packages full of feel good at home items for those who might be stuck alone right now. Since for the most part we’ve already been operating under Red Zone protocols for some time now, you’ll still be able to book your haircut appointments with us as normal (at least in the same sense of normal we’ve all been getting used to over the past few months). Masks will continue to be required for all services, meaning we still will not be offering hot towel shaves and beard trims will be limited to what can be done with your mask on. While things are far from idea...l, because of the nature of our model and the few number of chairs in our shops, we’re extremely fortunate to at least be able to continue operating in a way that *somewhat* resembles normal times (at least for now). The same cannot be said for many of our friends and neighbours, especially those in the restaurant and hospitality business. Many, if not all, have much more complicated businesses, bigger teams, significantly more overhead and depend on higher volumes just to make it all work at the end of the day. So with that said, please arrive to your haircut HUNGRY. Make sure everyone at home hasn’t eaten either. Heck, don’t make any food plans for the next couple days. Takeout is going to be a lifeblood for a lot of these places all over again, so when you’re in the shop for your haircut chat up your barber or one of the guys behind the counter about their favourite local restaurant, bottle shop, or general store and stock up on takeout for yourself and everyone else at home (Food AND booze. The LCBO is going to be fine without you). It will make a difference. Plus, it gives your barber an excuse to brag about all the cool restaurants, and pivoted business models in the neighbourhood that they’ve got the inside scoop on. As said before like a broken record in a handful of earlier posts, this year is affecting people in vastly different ways - and not just in ways you can see, touch or feel. Continue to be extra patient, understanding, supportive, and compassionate. We will ALL be better off if we work together with a leave no man behind attitude through this winter than we will by simply just looking out for ourselves. It’s a fact. Coincidentally, the Hamilton Spectator released the results of the 2020 Reader’s Choice Awards this morning on the same day that we opened our doors 5 years ago, today. In each of those five years you’ve graciously supported us in top categories, and again this year, we’re humbled that the shops placed Diamond and Platinum with four awards across three categories. It goes without saying that 2020 has been challenging all around in unique ways for everyone, so the support this... year in particular is wildly appreciated by our team. While the feelings are somewhat bittersweet as on one hand we’re celebrating a small business milestone and can’t express enough how grateful we are for the support over the past five years, on the other hand we’re painfully aware of the challenges this year in particular has presented to the small business community in Hamilton as a whole, and that the next few months especially will continue to test the limits for a lot of people in all sorts of ways. So I suppose as we blow out the candles this year, we can hope that the incredible community that has built our city back up again over the past years can refocus, redeploy and continue to support the workers on the front lines across the city over these coming winter months especially. Not only with purchasing decisions, but also with care, compassion, and sensitivity because there are people out there that are struggling, but still getting up everyday and doing their best within the circumstances to deliver the products and services that the rest of us need to feel some sense of normalcy and tranquility in a world that seems to want to give us anything but. But, I said it before, and I’ll say it again - we got this, Hamilton! It goes without saying that times are tough and challenges are abundant as ever; especially as we look towards the colder months of this pandemic. For those of you who are working hard to find your place back into the workforce, especially those in particular jobs and industries, we know it’s been, and will continue to be hard. As if interviews aren’t already awkward enough in normal times, Zoom definitely isn’t helping the situation (is my mic on? Wait, sorry that’s my room...m... I mean cat. One of our favourite little initiatives through the shop has been our Lunch Money for CityKidz program in which your choice to enjoy a local favourite, Lunch Money from Collective Arts, made a contribution to meals for low-income kids in Hamilton. With Lunch Money being phased out at the brewery and the Audio Visual Lager being phased in, weve p...assed on your donations (thank you!) and will be transitioning to The A/V Club, supporting CityKidz arts and music programs when we open again. These programs inspire young Hamiltonians, especially those in challenging circumstances, to be creative and dream BIG about the future of our communities, our city, and our new world. Hello friends, Five years ago, today, our business officially started up; but with a seemingly backwards idea. As technology and social media continued to explode, we thought more than ever people might actually want to start slowing down and connecting in person again. Barbershops have traditionally been a place for people to gather, share ideas, and participate in a very human experience a concept that, in theory, couldnt be easily replicated online. Well, this pandemic ...has confirmed one thing getting a haircut online is in fact pretty damn difficult! Although, the whole physical distancing thing has been a little bit of a curveball. Jokes aside, we wanted to say thank you for the outpouring of genuine support weve received and for all of you who have checked in with the team to see how everyone is doing. Like with everyone else, we dont yet know when well be able to open again, so unfortunately, theres just not a practical, safe, responsible (or legal) way for us to cut your hair at the moment. Bringing people together is what we do, but right now, thats exactly what we cant do. So, in the meantime, if youd like to join our WAIT LIST for when we reopen, please send a request through our regular appointment form on our website. Well keep your information handy, and as soon as we have some solid dates, well reach out to set up the appointment time that works for you. The best thing you can do help us in the long-term is to take care of yourself, your family, and your neighbors, so that once this is over, were all able to catch up again at the shop. This crisis is affecting everyone in very different ways, and undoubtedly, Hamilton will be a different place moving forward, with new ideas, perspectives, and stories. As always, the barbershop will be the place to talk about it. Some thoughts about organizing your time during the shutdown. I sent this to our team this morning, and a few of them suggested that some of the ideas might be helpful to others at the moment, so decided to share. Hopefully there might be something useful to take home, but if not, apologies for straining your eyes!

It's going to be a tough time for your favorite spots and their teams, locally and otherwise. Wishing everyone the best of luck pulling through in all respects, and looking forward to being part of a community helping small businesses build themselves back up when this all over.

As our fast paced society begins to slow itself down, Im hoping we can take this opportunity to slow ourselves down a little as well. Take care of your health, physically and mentally. Its going to be tougher for some than others, so help each other out with that too. Be patient and compassionate; people respond to differently to stress and anxiety. At the barbershop its our fundamental job to give you a little break from the world when youre here, but this time the worl...ds got to take a little bit of a break from us. Yes, society as we know it is going to get a real good shake, but maybe thats okay -there are definitely some things that need a reassessment anyway. Besides, in a few weeks time theres going to be a force of people that have had the opportunity to read, reflect, explore themselves, their minds and ideas in ways we havent since we were kids. Were going to have the opportunity to use our imagination again, to be creative and to dream up new solutions. I think were going to miss each other and the world as we knew it, but I think were also going to appreciate each other that little bit more on the other side. Plus, think of all the great conversations were going to have when were all back in the chair! Over the next few weeks we wont be seeing many of you, and thats OK! As we make adjustments over the next few days we want to assure you that we understand, and support you canceling your appointment. There doesnt need to be a reason, we wont assume youre sick, we just want to make sure you feel comfortable making that decision knowing its us encouraging you to do so. Besides, longer hair is coming back in style anyways! While were closely following the direction of the government and ensuring extra precautions for those of you we do see, things will inevitably be winding down, most likely sooner than later. Things have come some ways since the days with the old Book. Its funny to look back and imagine again when these scribbled names were our way of trying to keep an organized schedule and some resemblance of a business. Cant conceive of what the past month might have looked like on paper and pencil. Fortunately, with some better systems in place and a big team effort, the holiday season rolled through with a relative calm, despite it being the very busiest yet. With that sa...id, I wanted to make a special shout out to the guys up front, Frank, Matt, Yuri and Elliott, who handled the countless calls, appointments, schedule changes and adjustments that all culminated into a relatively seamless holiday season. Hats off to you guys. But also to the rest of the team who put in that little bit extra to make it happen, and also to all of the folks around town who worked behind the scenes in kitchens, back rooms, doing overtime in the office or behind a counter and everywhere else to make for a successful holiday in Hamilton this year. As the year wraps up, in the typical cheesy and sentimental fashion, Im reflecting on the past year(s) and how much has happened in Hamilton in such a short time. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of people in this city that are working hard as hell in their own way to make this city better. Its crazy. While peoples ideas are inevitably different, I do genuinely believe that most peoples intentions are generally good, and at the end of the day were all more or less trying to achieve the same things. As the new year comes rolling in, and the city continues to grow and reshape itself, Im hopeful, but also confident that more and more good ideas will align with our citys hard work ethic and passion to move us in the right direction. While it might just be one little incremental bit at a time, hopefully we can all look back on each of our own individual versions of the Old Book and feel some sense of pride and appreciation for the journey weve all been on together over the past years.
