Art and Activism Halifax 17.11.2020

We are thrilled that poet/artist/ filmmaker Sylvia Hamilton will join us as our guest for the last public Poetry as Social Practice class on 4 December at 6pm in the Art Bar. Plan to be there! Sylvia D. Hamilton is a multi award-winning filmmaker, artist, writer, and educator. Her work explores the contributions and experiences of African Canadians, particularly women, and exposes and probes Canadian histories of segregation and systematic racism. Hamilton teaches at University of Kings College in the School of Journalism and the Contemporary Studies Program. A big shout out to co-sponsors Eyelevel Gallery and NSCAD's Art Bar + Projects for making the public part of Poetry as Social Practice possible.

Lindsay Dobbin will be our guest this coming week, November 13, in Poetry as Social Practice. Dobbin is a Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) - Acadian - Irish artist, musician, curator and educator who lives and works on the Bay of Fundy in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People. Born in and belonging to the Kennebecasis River Valley in New Brunswick, Dobbin has lived throughout the Maritimes as well as the Yukon Territory. Dobbin's place-responsive practic...e includes music, sound art, performance, sculpture, installation, social practices and writing, and is invested in and influenced by Indigenous epistemologies and cultural practices, such as drumming. Through placing listening, collaboration and improvisation at the centre of the creative process, Dobbin's practice explores the connection between the environment and the body, and engages in a sensorial intimacy with the living land and water. Co-sponsored by Eyelevel and the Art Bar +Projects. See more
