Don't miss the third lecture of the 2021 Gallery Associates Sunday Art Lecture Series: The Visionary Eye: Surrealism from Europe to North America! Joining us via Zoom this Sunday from 2-4pm, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Elliott H. King. . In this presentation "Salvador Dalí’s Paranoiac Vision", Dr. King will discuss the trajectory of Dalí’s career from surrealism to ‘mysticism,’ including the longevity of the ‘paranoiac-critical method’ Dalí’s means of ‘voluntary hallu...cination,’ conceived in the early 1930s. Although Dalí broke from surrealism in 1940, describing himself as an apostolic Catholic and ‘ex-surrealist,’ he never abandoned ‘paranoiac vision’ as his primary vehicle of artistic inspiration. . Sophie Pemberton was a local artist who grew up in the Rockland area of Victoria, not far from the AGGV. Her interest in painting developed early and at the age of twelve her work was being publicly exhibited. She went on to study art in France at the Académie Julian during a time when women were expected to pursue art careers only under "hobbyist" or non-professional labels. Although she eventually shifted her focus away from her career toward her family life, she is an impo...rtant early example of a local female artist who pushed back against the expectations of her time, pursuing the largely male dominated schools of oil painting and portrait drawing, and achieving professional distinction for her work. You might be familiar with the large Sophie Pemberton paintings permanently hanging across from the Massey Sales Gallery in the Spencer Mansion, but did you know that we currently have two Sophie Pemberton drawings displayed in the Founders Gallery in an installation celebrating the AGGV's collection of figure and portrait drawings? Come see these in person! Image Credit: Sophie Pemberton (Canadian, 1869 - 1959), Untitled (Portrait of a Girl), 1899. Charcoal; 41.8 x 32.7 cm. Gift of Mr. Philip E. Dennison. His large scale papercut Twelve is part of our permanent collection and is currently on display at the Gallery as part of Celebrating the AGGV Collection. This work was acquired after he took part in the exhibition Traces back in 2013 at the AGGV. This talk starts with Pien speaking to his works from 2013 and goes on to share what he has been working on since. That is a body of work that is continuously en...gaged with our humanity and how that can be expressed through a range of media, context and scale. . "To 'unsettle' might take a variety of forms in terms of re-examinations of previous scholarship or questioning current academic or institutional practices as the essays in this book exemplify. While bringing new questions to past histories is an established part of scholarly practice, at its core 'unsettling' requires work that is ...actively aware of both past an ongoing effects of settler colonialism; commits to listening, learning, and acting in ways that respect and uphold Indigenous priorities; and calls for or demonstrates new practices based in this awareness and accountability to scholarly work." - Katheryn Bunn-Marcuse, Introduction in Unsettling Native Art Histories on the Northwest Coast http://ow.ly/QWhc50BWVRe #AGGV #shopAGGV #galleryshop #shoplocal #shopBC #localartists #yyjarts #yyjartists #northwestcoast #unsettlingarthistories #arthistory #indigenousart #listening #learning #artbooks

Can't get enough ceramics? Throw, Slip, Spin remains on view in the Pollard Gallery, and continues to inspire and impress as it invites exploration of both new surprises and old favourites from the AGGV's ceramics collection! In the 1970s and 1980s, Victoria became an important centre for ceramics. Ceramic artists worked and continue to work throughout the city and the surrounding region. While the AGGV’s interest in pottery dates back to the institution’s early years, re...cent exhibitions, such as Back to the Land and Life with Clay: Pottery & Sculpture by Jan and Helga Grove, have inspired donations and acquisitions from local and national artists - including artists, Lynne Johnson, Terry Ryals, Peter Powning, Robin Hopper, John Chalke, Andrew Thomson, Alexandra McCurdy and many more! After checking out Throw, Slip, Spin stop by the Gallery Shop and add to your own ceramics collection with original pieces by the Victoria Hands on Pottery Collective, Marita Manson, Roxanne Gagnon, Linda Mercer and more! Nuna Parr is best known for his narrative drawings of animals. The images that populate his drawings and prints depict myths, shamanic transformations, and memories recalled from his early years living on the land as a hunter with his wife, Eleeshushe, and his two sons, Nuna Parr and Peter Parr, who are also artists. Parr favoured the stonecut and stencil method of printmaking and also enjoyed working in coloured pencil, pastel and felt-tip pen in addition to graphite when ex...ecuting his drawings. The few years that he worked as an artist were quite productive; he created over 2000 drawings during this time. After his passing in 1969 one of his prints titled, Hunters of Old was selected for a 1977 Canadian postage stamp. Visit the Gallery and check out Nuna Parr's drawing, Eeleesoosee -- currently on view in the Founders Gallery in an installation celebrating the AGGV's Collection of Figure and Portrait Drawings.
