We received an early first edition archival inkjet print by James Jean. There were distracting, white surface abrasions on the print. It looked as if objects sat on top of the print or were moved across (see photos) media. The gallery sold our client this print in this condition, and he took it to us as soon as he received the package and opened it. I wanted to share how we brilliantly repaired the multiple surface abrasions. working on contemporary art is far more difficult ...and time consuming than historic art, even if the historic art is more damaged. Contemporary art materials are laced with fillers and chemicals, where historic art materials (for the most part) are not. For this specific treatment, I used dry pigment mixed with cellulose to match the exact texture of the surface of the paper. We retouched the media abrasions using conservation (reversible) materials, followed by 3 humidification and blotter flattening treatments. All-in-all we reduced the damage by 99%. We also custom framed this piece with museum matboard and museum glazing that will block UV-light that will harm and fade the media. ART-KITECT.COM to see our full list of services. This painting is entitled "Cloudy Afternoon" and has sentimental value to our client. His mother painted this landscape of the Rocky Mountains viewed from Calgary in October of 1996. The Conservation of Gilded Frames (Historic and Contemporary): Wooden gilded surfaces come into the Art-Kitect Conservation Lab as small objects, frames, and furniture, as well as on large-scale artifacts such as altarpieces and architectural elements in houses or buildings. With regard to the latter, their scale in itself is of course a major consideration in conservation treatment approaches and cost, and the context in which they are found may have an impact on whether or... not they are recognized as worthy of preservation. In Brazil, for instance, hundreds of churches are entirely decorated with metal leaf and polychromy or even japanning. Unfortunately, these surfaces are often poorly understood in terms of their original materials, techniques, and aged surface appearance. And too often they have been repainted using inappropriate materials. It is important to understand the motivations of such past restoration campaigns: they were initiated for the most part by priests in order to give the community a sense of renewal through fresh-looking painted surfaces, especially during sacred festivities. I'm using an exceptionally fine cellulose powder and titanium white pigment to treat the stain to perfectly retouch the contemporary white paper that the oil stain sits on. Art-Kitect Conservation recently treated an interior contemporary sculpture for @Fourseasons Residences and Hotel Yorkville and the @Askerigallery Moscow. It was a pleasure working with both the residences and the gallery. The sculpture is made of three parts: two podiums and one artistic cloud pinnacle. A BTS and After Treatment photos on the encaustic painting...We worked on a disaster response painting that came into our lab from outside of Toronto. The painting is entitled "Finale II" and is an encaustic painting on canvas that wasn't supported. Encaustic paintings are made of artist wax and are prone to damage. The painting came into us following a flood and had mould, tidelines, cracks, paint loss, cracking from the stretcher bars and a slumped canvas. We cleaned and re...mediated the canvas recto/verso and even suctioned it in some areas with our mobile suction table. We also removed the painting from it's old stretcher bars and designed a new stretcher system with adequate braces and boards to neatly stretch the painting tight again. This was important because if the encaustic layers weren't supported, all of our work would go out the window. The painting looks times better and more professional now that it's nice and flat. We also stabilized, filled and inpainted any abraded and lost media with museum grade materials top shelf acrylics. . . We treated the Bronze Sculptures at One & Two Old Mill with Conservation grade materials and techniques. The copper oxides we’re safely removed and treated and the black patina coating is preserved for another season.
