We are deeply saddened by the news of the incomparable Garry Neill Kennedy’s passing (1935-2021). An exceptionally kind, intelligent, funny person and artist, GNK will be honoured in our collective memories for countless years to come. Artspeak staff and summer intern Yasmine Whaley-Kalaora are currently deep in our Archive and Special Collection Libraryorganizing, updating, arranging, tidying, taking stock, researching, and reading togetheras we prepare for our upcoming Fall/Winter programming. Spending the summer months doing this work together has allowed us to engage the archive as not merely a repository of our organizational history, but to closely consider the wider and continually shifting context...s of artistic production. Our work continues to be guided by a series of overarching questions. In consideration of the politics of cultural production, how do our citational choices, methodological approaches, and the systems we employ work to uphold particular histories and practices while obscuring others? Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing highlights from our deep dive with you. More info on our website! https://artspeak.ca/ ID: A shelf of books with green sticky note tabs attached to the books’ spines, indicating the publication date and author’s last name for each, set against a cantaloupe coloured background.

This is the last week to stroll past our window exhibition May Day Mayday Maydaze (May 1 - June 12, 2021)! For us at the gallery over the last five weeks, this exhibition offered many reminders on how important community organizing can be to our collective wellbeing. We’re still selling print editions, with all proceeds going to the DTES Response. More info on the editions can be found here: https://artspeak.ca/may-day-mayday-maydaze/ --... Join us for an evening with the Asian Brain Trust. Registration is limited, so register early! As a friendship-based collective situated across different countr...ies, geographies, and time zones, Asian Brain Trust has been navigating the work/life balance of checking in on your people while getting your stuff done. With the advent of our current pandemic era and the postponement/cancellation of MIXED COMPANY NEE BAD SOCIETY, ABT has been hibernating/reimagining/listening/coping with an art world that is virtue signalling its change, while nothing changes at all. Join us to watch some live reactions to the forgotten Avenger, Indiana Jones, and byosnax. Please be mindful to cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend so we can make your space available to someone on the waitlist.
