Ascend Movement 01.03.2021

It is chilly out there today! I sit at my dining room table and look out at the ski hill - not a lot of brave souls out there just yet but man does that corduroy look amazing! If you live in Kimberley it is likely you already embrace outdoor all-weather activity. You probably have some pretty good strategies to stay warm during cold-weather activities. This article still had some nuggets of new information for me. https://www.nytimes.com//exercise-outdoors-cold-weather.ht... *I would like to add that sleep also appears to have an impact in our ability to regulate temperature. I did a Wim Hoff course last year and the instructor suggested sleep might actually be the most significant variable that affected one's ability to tolerate and adapt to cold stress.*

1000 Hours Outside is one of the best parts of social media for me these days.

**Edit: This class is full now! *I've had a few people inquire about this post in the last few hours though and I do have an early morning program (Tuesdays 6:45-8:00am) that could welcome one more. This group is an athletic crew of ladies working on diversifying movements, building strength, and mobility.* A spot has become available in our Thursday 5:30pm class.... This class started as a "Fit From the Ground Up" offering but our current group has goals of building functional strength with a focus on core health. The plan for these sessions: 15-minutes of mobility and activation movements 45 minutes of strength, balance and fundamental/natural movement 15-minute daily roll-out This 75-minute class is in-studio only (max 4-participants) and runs for 6 weeks, starting this Thursday, Feb 11th until Thursday March 18th. When we're young movement/exercise is just plain old play! When and why does this change? This nostalgic mama might have been a little distracted by cute baby Jack while working on Tim's "dad bod" this morning. Loved having an adorable little human in the studio

Well that's a wrap! I've just managed to complete the first season of programs here at the studio! We started with big hopes of keeping our small groups safely moving together but we had to pivot half way through our programs. All who joined me were amazingly patient and kind to embrace the virtual options.... Bony Tony kept me company and did his best to communicate movement over a flat screen. I think we did alright in the end. Despite the bumpy and tumultuous ride of the last few weeks, it was an amazing way to start out. I advertised for 4 programs and ended up running 10! I had 48 different clients join me in groups, in private sessions, and online. Almost half of those clients were new to me. It is thrilling to have strangers give this little studio and myself a chance! The ability to resume in person classes has made me hopeful and full of ideas for January programs - I'll start rolling them out in the next few days!

As we wrap up our fall programs over zoom this week it looks like Dr Bonnie has released the guidelines for 'low intensity group exercise'. Luckily these new guidelines don't change much for our in-studio programs - our covid protocols were already consistent with what is now required. I must say I feel I can now properly "plan" (as much as anyone can plan for the future right now!) for our winter 2021 program schedule.... Watch for the winter schedule to roll out in the coming days - we will have virtual and in-studio () offerings, starting in January! https://www2.gov.bc.ca//covid-19-public-health-guidelines-

We've got a full selection of Yoga Tune Up massage balls for sale! The smallest are 2.5" in diameter and applies an area of pressure similar to a thumb. These are by far the most popular size and can be used just about anywhere. These are a must have for mobilizing the feet and are so much kinder than lacrosse balls. The next size is just a bit bigger and diffuses the pressure a little more broadly while increasing the depth of pressure when you are doing lying work. These... guys are less popular but if you want to dig deeper they definitely have their place. The Alpha is 3.5" in diameter which applies quite a broad sense of pressure and increases your height away from the wall or floor allowing for greater movement and more diverse release techniques. Using them in pairs can mimic rolling that you might do on a roller but with a very different and more precise effect. The coregeous ball is an air filled, soft and sticky ball of about 9" diameter. I use it for really gentle massage, superficial sliding work (moving the skin and superfiscial tissues ) and is super handy tool when working on breathing mechanics. I also use it for resisted isometric work for the neck, shoulder and hips

I went live today! Super nervous, which I can see in my own stiff movement here but overall a lot less scary and pretty happy that the #LIVELOCAL #EATLOCAL YXC Festival provided an opportunity for me to step out of my social medial comfort zone.

I've done a poor job promoting this as it scares the heck out of me but I'm going to go LIVE today at 2pm as part of the #LIVELOCAL #EATLOCAL YXC Festival. Eeek! Join me for a quick tutorial on a squat and how to tune up your movements so they support healthier knees, hips, backs and set you up for a great ski season.... 2PM TODAY, OCTOBER 29th
