Last week Jesse and Leah completed the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) testing for the summer! We collected a total of 36 samples from 7 lakes and rivers. Our favourite part of the AIS testing was being able to enjoy nature in the heat! Zebra and Quagga mussels attach to hard surfaces and can survive for several weeks without being immersed in water with the right conditions! This is why you see the "Clean, Drain and Dry your boat" signs. Here's hoping all the samples come back NEGATIVE! Keep these invasive mussels out of our lakes!

A really interesting read.

Jesse and Leah were hard at work in the Lower Souris Watershed with Aquatic Invasive Species veliger sampling on Tuesday but with a little twist! We ventured out to Moosomin Lake (Pipestone Creek) in our chest waders to take some samples near the dam and at the regional park boat launch. Did you know that one female zebra mussel can produce up to one million eggs a year? That would be equivalent to 85% of the population of people in Saskatchewan!

Big news on the water front today! Having been involved in the preliminary meetings regarding this project a while ago it’s amazing to know that it’s going to come to fruition. This is a big deal for Saskatchewan agriculture and water security for the province in general. Awesome stuff!

The AWSA has completed their Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) sampling for the month of June. We were out at Fishing Lake, Whitesand River Regional Park, Good Spirit Lake, Madge Lake, Batka Lake and Lake of the Prairies last week, taking water samples for veligers. Veligers are the free-swimming larval form of adult Zebra and Quagga mussels. The earlier we can detect the presence or absence of these nasty little buggers the better! Here's to hoping all samples come back a big NEGATIVE Jesse Nielsen Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds
