Have you noticed all the work happening on the exterior of the Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre this summer? We're looking quite spiffy now at almost 120 years old. Thanks to the RQM staff for all their work - its much appreciated!

Here in Nova Scotia, Theatre Nova Scotia (our provincial service organization for live theatre) has launched a provincial visibility campaign - #BeSceneNS The Astor and LITF are involved and weather permitting we will light the theatre red for tomorrow evening, in recognition of the loss of live theatre over the past months. Join us tomorrow and share why you miss, volunteer, support and work in and/or make live theatre. We'll share more information later today. #BeSceneNS

Message from the new Chairman: My name is John Simmonds. At the Astor’s Annual General Meeting, on Monday evening, I was installed as the incoming Chairman of the Board along with the entire current board and a number of new members. I am very excited and humbled by this honour and pledge to carry on, as best I can, building on the fine work of Kristopher Snarby, who has remained as Past Chair. I am pleased to say I am assuming the position with the theatre in good financial ...health. Over time we will more formally introduce ourselves, so you know who is working on your behalf. Suffice it to say that we have a very talented group of returning and new board members who will undertake some ambitious plans for growth and development. Utilizing our collective expertise and passions we hope to maintain The Astor as the pre-eminent arts and cultural centre for Queens Coast and beyond. The past year has been quite eventful with Covid-19 presenting unprecedented challenges both within the theatre and life in general. A lot of our work will revolve around re-establishing programming and creating a safe and secure environment to which staff and patrons feel comfortable returning. Keep checking these pages as we roll out our specific plans and scheduling for the balance of this season. To start we will experiment with social distancing for in-house movies. We will supplement that with live streaming events. Some activities are also returning to the Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre, and we will keep a close watch on these for safety and compliance with Covid-19 restrictions. We are also as anxious as many of you are to get Chase the Ace up and running. Director Colleen Wolfe will let us know when we are good to go. We have an active search underway for a new full time General Manager and support staff. In the meantime, Jean Robinson Dexter, who many of you know, has assumed the interim General Manager role and is doing a great job. Jean will also spearhead the executive search for the new GM. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you soon at The Astor. Astor Transitions The Board of Directors of the Astor Theatre Society would like to thank Sandy Nicholson, upon the completion of his contract as the Astor’s general manager, in early August. We appreciate his time with us and his work to sustain the theatre and Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre, particularly during these last few months, creating efficient systems, and improvements to the grant development process. We are pleased to share that Jean Robinson-Dexter, Presid...ent of Horizons Community Development Associates, Inc., and producer of past Astor productions, including The Rocky Horror Show and The Full Monty, is supporting our work in the coming months. She will offer guidance and assistance as we search for and transition to a full-time general manager and determine the future of the Astor Theatre and the Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre. The GM position posting and full details are available by contacting Jean at [email protected]
