Beaten gold leaf is mostly industrially produced in China. In Venice, Berta Battiloro is upholding the craft of gold beating by hand, using a hammer. The family business is "The Last of the Gold Beaters" and they’re very proud of their craftmanship.

It's Tiara Tuesday! Ruby and Spinel diadem The diadem and jewels Bavarian ruby and spinel set. The jewelry suite is nearly two centuries old. Made by the Bava...rian court jeweler Caspar Rieländer, the set was a gift from King Ludwig I of Bavaria to his new wife, Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, in 1830. Therese was able to enjoy her new jewels while an important celebration erupted around lei: The first Oktoberfest was celebrated in Munich as part of Ludwig and Therese's wedding festivities, and has been an annual event ever since. The focal point of Rieländer's massive new set was, without a doubt, the diadem. This huge diadem, which features numerous floral elements in its design, is made of gold and set with diamonds, rubies and spinels. The tiara was so heavy and difficult to wear that apparently Therese didn't like it very much, and I don't think there are any portraits of her wearing the tiara. Many of the flowers feature diamond petals with rubies or spinels in the center. The set also includes a pair of bracelets. The floral pattern runs through each piece of the set, as you can see above. And here are the necklace and earrings. The whole set now lives in the treasure room of one of Bavaria's largest museums, the Munich Residenz. via @royality_tiaras See more

L'ULTIMO RESPIRO DI POMPEI : LA TECNICA DEI CALCHI IN GESSO Read this post in English or Spanish below) THE LAST BREATH OF POMPEII: THE TECHNIQUE OF PLASTER CAS...TS EL ÚLTIMO ALIENTO DE POMPEYA: LA TÉCNICA DE LAS MALETAS DE YESO Gran parte degli abitanti di Pompei morirono asfissiati dai gas venefici eruttati dal #Vesuvio. THE LAST BREATH OF POMPEII: THE TECHNIQUE OF PLASTER CASTS Most of the inhabitants of Pompeii died asphyxiated by the poisonous gases erupted by the #Vesuvius. Their bodies were subsequently entirely buried by volcanic ash that rained down from the sky. Giuseppe Fiorelli around 1870 introduced a method that involved the creation of a casting of liquid gypsum in the cavities left by the bodies (but also with other organic materials) that had decomposed inside the volcanic material. This allowed the making of casts of the victims of the eruption. Once the plaster had solidified, the surrounding soil was removed and the resulting form was brought to light. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, using this technique, casts of numerous human bodies, animals and objects were made EL ÚLTIMO ALIENTO DE POMPEYA: LA TÉCNICA DE LAS MALETAS DE YESO La mayoría de los habitantes de Pompeya murieron asfixiados por los gases venenosos que hizo erupción el #Vesubio.

This has got to be one of the most powerful photographs I have ever seen. Above is a battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in 1914, prior to being despatched to ...the front line; below is the same battalion upon their return in 1918 after the armistice. On the eve of the centennial anniversary of the armistice I would like to remember the millions of souls who gave their lives defending our shores and preserving our freedom, and to those who survived the unimaginable horrors. Lest we forget. See more
