We love seeing customer-generator installations. Here is one installed in Miami, Florida. It looks great! The electrician did an excellent job here. The generator is sitting on a concrete pad with gravel around it. There is no worry about water collecting around it. It is installed away from any windows while still close to the home for some added protection. The electrician added a junction box on the outside of the generator. He did this instead of running the wiring up through the bottom. This method is preferred over running it out the bottom. It is not only easier, but it is also accessible should any changes or service be required in the future.

Vibration and corrosion are the leading cause of electrical failures in generators. This is why we spend the majority of our assembly time on wiring and testing. These photos show just how far we go to make sure it does not become an issue on an AURORA generator. Wire loom is solid, not split, so water cant get it in. Nylon insulated terminals are used because they are more durable than vinyl/PVC. Terminals are double-crimped to deliver additional tensile strength a...nd strain relief against wire pull-out. Heat shrink with an adhesive protects the wires and creates a waterproof seal to prevent wire corrosion and make a permanent connection. Cable ties are black UV stabilized nylon rated for operating temperature range between -40 to 185 F Highly stranded bare copper conductor wire called MTW is used instead of TEW that is made with tinned copper conductors. Heres an old prototype/proof of concept DC generator we tested out. It uses a Hatz diesel engine running at 1800 RPM, and belt drives a vehicle alternator to charge an AGM truck battery. The AGM battery powers an inverter. It has auto-start using a DynaGen controller. The goal is to reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and noise. Only run the engine for short periods of time and use the stored power from some batteries the rest of the time. Today we are using another engine with auto-start and direct driving a DC generator for 12, 24, and 48 volts. It uses an advanced charge controller so it can charge many different types of batteries. Tech Tip: CAT Engine and DynaGen Controller When its cold, this Caterpillar Tier4 engine has a warm-up idle speed of 1000 RPM. Using it in a generator causes some issues. We need 1800 PRM. If its not at 1800 RPM, the alternator is not ready to accept a load. Also, the generator controller will detect the under-speed condition and shut it down. Thankfully DYNAGEN controllers have a feature you can use to warm-up and cool-down at different speeds. The second issue is pre...venting the end-user from applying load before the generator is ready to accept it. That we fixed by switching off the voltage regulator, so there is no alternator output until after the warm-up time has passed, and the engine is up to normal operating speeds.
