UPDATE #1 - Calgary police officer killed in the line of duty With the consent of his family, we are able to release the name of our member who was killed whil...e on duty late yesterday. Sgt. Andrew Harnett, 37, joined the Calgary Police Service 12 years ago, after serving as a military police officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2019 and was most recently assigned to District 5. While working to keep our streets safe, Andrew was struck by a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop. Despite the heroic attempts by his colleagues and members of EMS, he died as a result of his injuries. There is a massive effort underway to locate and bring to justice those responsible for taking the life of one of our members. Dozens of sworn and civilian members are working around the clock tracking down each and every lead and these efforts will not stop. Original release below. Calgary police officer killed in the line of duty While working to keep our streets safe, a Calgary Police Service officer was struck by a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop. Despite desperate attempts by his colleagues, and members of EMS, he died as a result of his injuries. At approximately 10:50 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, an officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Falconridge Boulevard and Falconridge Drive N.E. During the traffic stop, the vehicle fled, striking the officer in the process. Other officers were nearby and rendered aid as quickly as possible, while EMS rushed to their side. Paramedics and fellow officers fought to save his life, but he was pronounced deceased at hospital near midnight. The search for the driver continues. Road closures in the area are expected to occur for some time. No further details will be released at this time to ensure all of the officer’s family have been properly notified and cared for. The profound grief this has brought to all members of the Calgary Police Service and their families is unmeasurable. Please bear with us while we work through this difficult time.

This one is hard to articulate but we are going to try our best. On Saturday, November 28, deputies responded to a Venice home where a 14-month-old baby accide...ntally drowned in her family’s pool. Eight deputies responded to the home but first on scene were Deputies Mike Nickerson and Tony Egoville. When they arrived, baby Charlee had no pulse. Without hesitation, Deputies Nickerson and Egoville relied on their training and began lifesaving efforts. The two performed CPR inside the home and in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. It is the longest Deputies Nickerson and Egoville have ever performed CPR in their careers. Charlee regained consciousness and was transferred to All Children’s Hospital where she was intubated for 10 days. Once back home, Deputy Nickerson stopped by to check in and drop off a few Christmas presents. Charlee is doing great and her mom Stephanie - who greeted Deputy Nickerson with a huge hug - tells us Mike will forever be a part of her family. Deputy Nickerson, who has served for nearly 25 years, tells us this will forever be one of the most impactful calls of his career. For those who question the profession we have chosen, know that this right here is the reason. Charlee. She is our reason.

6-year-old reported missing and his family suspected he was lost in the woods. Grey Bruce OPP, OPP Aviation, Canine and Emergency Response Team all worked toget...her alongside South Bruce Peninsula and Saugeen First Nation Fire Services to locate the child in good health. Reuniting a missing child with their family is one of the highlights of an officer's career.

Say MY name. I was shot in the head and killed, on my 47th birthday, while responding to shots fired in a domestic dispute. I was murdered by Carl Le'Ellis Bl...ount, a black male on probation, with outstanding warrants, whose lengthy criminal history, included assault toward both his girlfriend and an officer. I didnt have the opportunity to defend myself in any manner. My killer approached me as I sat in my squad car, lights on, engine running, and pulled the trigger. I was left to die, and was later found slumped over the steering wheel. I was a veteran, and a survivor of Desert Storm. I did not, however, survive serving those in my own community. I was senselessly taken from my four daughters, and my fiancé. My name is Jeffrey Westerfield, and my life mattered. Jonny Castro Art #SayHisName #AllLivesMatter #BlueLivesMatter

Detroit Police Officer Rasheen McClain died in the line of duty last night. He was responding to a woman's distress call and was shot in the neck by a violent p...arolee. Officer McClain did not know the woman. But he did not delay in his response to her cries. Tragically, he did not make it home to his wife and children. Rasheen McClain was a good man. He was a brave man. He has my gratitude and respect. As do the men and women of the Detroit Police Department. See more

It may not look like much of a work related injury, however, read on. On the job, So I seriously hesitated posting this picture. I am not looking for sympathy. ...I finally decided to post it so people can understand what police officers have to deal with. I was bit in the arm by an 18 year old female who is an admitted IV drug user. So not only do I have to worry about infection from a human bite, but all the possible diseases she could have. I'm tired of hearing all the negative things people say about cops. So the next time an officer is not overly nice or doesn't act like your issue is the worst thing in the world, just think about the stuff we deal with. I know my friends on Facebook support me and my profession, other wise I probably would have deleted you. But my friends, please pass this along to your friends the next time you hear someone say or post negative things about cops. We are all just people doing our job and hope to go home to our families at the end of the shift. See more

GRAPHIC By now, most everyone has heard about the two LA County Deputies who were ambushed while sitting in their patrol car. Soon after the reports flooded th...e airwaves about the shooting, additional reports came in that protestors were blocking the entrance to the hospital and chanting we hope they f****** die. But what hasnt been reported on much is how these two deputies are doing. The deputy on the passenger side was shot twice in the face with two rounds traveling through her jaw. Her partner was shot in the forehead and multiple times in his right arm. The female deputy, despite being shot twice in the face, was able to radio for help, coordinate a strategic response, remove herself and her partner from the vehicle, find cover, and apply a tourniquet to her partners right arm. Both deputies are still listed as serious, but stable condition. We just want you to think for a minute what you would do in that moment, after being shot in the face, and the type of mindset it takes to be able to react the way that they did. To use your effort and strength to drag someone else to safety and render aid to them, while you are also fighting for your life. These are the men and women in uniform, and these are the reasons that theyre so unique and pivotal to being the first responders to emergency situations.

The woman in the picture with a police officer is Helen Johnson from Tarrant, Alabama. She was caught stealing at a nearby Dollar General and the police were ca...lled to arrest her. The surprise of all is when the police officer arrived at the scene and asked her what she stole, she said, "Five Eggs To Feed My Hungry Children.". The police officer took her back to the supermarket and bought her groceries to feed herself and her kids. Miss Helena started crying and asked the police officer, "Sir, this is too much for you have done for me...". The police officer replied, "Sometimes we shouldn't apply the law but must apply the humanity!". Credit to: Carol Robinson. Last Friday night I was standing outside of a barbershop in Cincinnati, Oh,with a small group of mostly black men, when this officer walked over to a group of u...s. He looked around curiously and said I dont see a car blocking an intersection while shaking his head. I asked him what was he talking about. He said someone called and reported that we had a car blocking the intersection. He paused for a minute and shook his head again. In that moment we both nodded and acknowledged what had just happened. Someone basically saw our group and made a false report. I asked him how long he had been on the job and he said 10 months. He asked what we were doing at the barbershop and so told him about the barbershop challenge Men of Courage and Ford Fund has sponsored. I asked if he wanted to come inside. He said he wanted to, but didnt want to spoil the fun with his presence. Again we both nodded and acknowledged the reality of distrust between the community and police officers. I offered to take him inside so he could meet the owners and establish a relationship. I told him that someone has to take the first step to healing these relationships. He said he wanted to, but was unsure of what the reaction would be. I told him it would be cool and that Jerome Bettis and a host of other amazing people were inside. He lit up like a lightbulb and said No way The Bus is in there, with a kid like smile. I said hold on, Ill grab him and have him come out. Jerome Bettis came out and the officer stood there with his mouth agape before saying if my dad was still alive he would be so excited, because you were his favorite player. We all stopped and sat in the moment before they went on to take a selfie together. It was one of those moments that reminded me of our humaneness, our frailties and our similarities. In that moment we were all just men navigating the world without the mask we are taught and trained to wear. I could have taken my offense to the call out on the officer and accused him of being a racist cop. He could have believed the caller and acted based on stereotypes about black men in groups. But we chose to just see each other and talk like humans. Its ultimately a decision we can all make. When he lit up like a kid at seeing his dads sports hero, I saw a little boy and the uniform no longer mattered. We can collectively choose to see beyond the uniforms we all wear. Its not easy and there is a lot of work to be done, but if we can at least start seeing each other, I believe things will get better. #writingmywrongs Photo credit Ernest Sisson Jr. See more
