Are you experiencing floaters and flashes? Most floaters and flashes are not a problem. However, there are times when they can be signs of a serious condition. Here is when you should call an ophthalmologist right away: You notice a lot of new floaters... You have a lot of flashes A shadow appears in your peripheral (side) vision A grey curtain covers part of your vision These floaters and flashes could be symptoms of a torn or detached retina. This is when the retina pulls away from the back of your eye. This is a serious condition that needs to be treated. If you are having concerns contact your Optometrist who can review your situation with you and if needed refer you to an experienced Ophthalmologist for further review. (Source: AAO)

Today's topic: What is a detached retina and who is at risk? As we get older, the vitreous in our eyes starts to shrink and get thinner. As the eye moves, the vitreous moves around on the retina without causing problems. But sometimes the vitreous may stick to the retina and pull hard enough to tear it. When that happens, fluid can pass through the tear and lift (detach) the retina. Who Is at Risk for a Detached Retina?... You are more likely to have a detached retina if you: need glasses to see far away (are nearsighted) have had cataract, glaucoma, or other eye surgery take glaucoma medications that make the pupil small (like pilocarpine) had a serious eye injury had a retinal tear or detachment in your other eye have family members who have had retinal detachment have weak areas in your retina (seen by an eye doctor during an exam) Routine eye exams are very important. Should you be experiencing any concerns with your vision be sure to make an appointment with your Optometrist. (Source: AAO - American Academy of Ophthalmology)

Tools of the trade. Precision and a faster outcome for our patients. The VISX S4 IR Excimer Laser System is one of the most advanced laser technology platforms available today. Variable beam sizes, which can be as small as 0.65mm, are used on a treatment area up to 6.5mm in diameter. This will conserve corneal tissue while optimizing treatment times. This means faster recovery and more precise outcomes for patients. Learn more on our website: http://barrielasik.com/index.php/visx-s4-ir

Your eyes work faster than any camera lens. In fact they are the fastest lens known to mankind. While camera lenses take a few seconds to focus on objects at different distances, human eyes can adjust focus almost instantly without any noticeable lag.

Your eyes are the only organ in your body that never takes a rest. Their performance never alters even with non-stop functioning. However, the muscles controlling your eyes and eyelids need rest. It is because of this that your eyes blink.
