HAPPY NEW YEAR!!HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
You may not have considered winter birdwatching because it is well known that many birds fly to warmer areas at this time of year. There are, however, plenty of... species that stick around in Ontario in the cold, including Cardinals, Bluejays, Chickadees, and finches. There are definitely advantages to winter birding, like fewer leaves and foliage, meaning more visible birds. The white of the snow also provides a perfect backdrop for stunning bird photos. Eager to birdwatch throughout the winter? Here are five quick tips that will make your winter birdwatching experience a great one: 1. Do your research and know what you are looking for: There are plenty of winter birding guides to consult in the form of books and magazines or websites and apps. It is very helpful to know what species are in your area during the winter months, and what their habits are. 2. Food: For backyard watchers, it is a necessity to provide food to invite the birds. Consider using covered feeders or leaving food in a sheltered area. Placing food in a high activity spots, and then waiting out of sight nearby is sometimes a good strategy for attracting birds. 3. Keep your distance: Birds in all seasons, including winter, will quickly flee once startled. Consider using binoculars or a high-zoom camera so you can watch birds from a distance. 4. Come prepared: Don’t forget to dress for the season! Experienced birdwatchers know that patience is key. You may be out there for quite a while so make sure you are dressed warmly from head to toe. 5. Have fun: As always the main goal of birdwatching is to have some fun and experience nature. Don’t go out hoping to complete a checklist or spot a rare species. Birdwatching can be a much more enjoyable experience if there is no set agenda! #pioneerparkbayfield #bayfieldontario #birdwatching
