As we await official confirmation of our next government, we call on every member of the Legislative Assembly to take immediate action to support B.C.’s maternity care system. B.C. midwives are involved in 25% of all primary maternity care in our province but are burning out in the absence of fair compensation and support. Please share widely! The Perinatal Wellbeing Research Team is recruiting for a study on Perinatal Cannabis Exposure and Early Developmental outcomes (PreCeedo). The study aims to collect preliminary data on cannabis use during pregnancy and its links with newborn development. Participation in the study involves online surveys and a phone call. Participants will receive Amazon gift cards as a thank-you. The study will be conducted online and individuals who are not cannabis users are still eligible to participate. Please see the poster for more details.

As B.C. heads to the polls, we want you to know where each party stands on the midwifery crisis in our province. In short, all need to do more to fix the fundamental problems that B.C. midwives are the second-worst compensated in our country and that they are burning out and leaving the province because of the workload. We are pleased that The BC Green Party acknowledges midwives’ role in B.C.’s primary care networks. However, what we need now are specific commitments to address the midwifery crisis and close the compensation gap between B.C. midwives and their counterparts in other provinces to ensure quality midwifery care remains available to B.C. families. The BC Liberal Party has committed to doubling the number of midwives graduating in B.C. each year. While we are thankful for the future additions to our profession, this does not adequately address the midwifery crisis we are facing. B.C.’s midwives need business supports, benefits and parental leave to ensure we can continue providing quality care for families.
