Looking back at our significant achievements from last year// In November, BCOCPP director Dr. Denise Laronde and doctoral student Madhurima Datta visited Hyderabad, India to spearhead a pilot study on oral cancer early detection in rural communities. This study is being held in collaboration with Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration, Canada, M.N.J. Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre, Hyderabad and two other Hyderabad dental schools. The aim of this study is to screen 1000 participants for early signs of cancer using adjunct tools like fluorescence visualization and DNA-Image cytometry to improve the sensitivity of screenings. Oral cancer is a major cause of cancer-related death in India; screening tools may significantly improve oral cancer survival rates in India.

Why we do what we do // This past weekend BCOCPP Founding Director Dr. Miriam Rosin and doctoral student Iris Lin attended the One Day for FA fundraiser gala in support of individuals with Fanconi anemia (FA) and their families. FA is an inherited DNA repair disorder that could lead to bone marrow failure, leukemia, and other cancers, including a 500- to 700-fold risk of developing head and neck cancers. The proceeds of the gala went towards advancing research, raising awareness, and providing support to affected families across the globe. For more information, visit: https://www.fanconi.org/
