The BCSTH team wishes a safe and happy holiday season to all. We express our deepest gratitude for all of the incredible work being done across the province to support women and families during these challenging times, and look forward to a happy and healthy new year.
"Moving day and the days of planning leading up to it is a particularly dangerous time for victims fleeing an abusive partner. According to experts and workers in this field, abuse is about control and when a woman plans to leave, her abuser knows they're about to lose control" So grateful for all the amazing work being done to support women and families by Shelter Movers Shelter Movers Vancouver! #EndVAW

Thank you, Parliamentary Secretary, Grace Lore, for recognizing the value of anti-violence workers across our province by moving towards core funding for sexual... assault centres and developing an action plan to end gender based violence. We're grateful to be recognized as trailblazers alongside WAVAW and the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, organizations who work tirelessly to support victims and survivors of sexual violence. On Trans Day of Remembrance, we honor and remember the trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary people whose lives have been taken by acts of anti-trans violence. Trans and gender-diverse people, especially people of colour and trans women, face disproportionate rates of violence and discrimination in Canada. Click for resources from National Resource Center on Domestic Violence on how we can better support trans and gender-diverse survivors in our work and in our communities: https://bit.ly/3fk6INK
Throwback to last month's ATF, we Queer As Funk!
"It’s a revitalization aspect but it’s also just embracing the history and the roots of our area. To listen to songs and find lesson plans, visit the Happy Friends/’Iiyus Siiye’yu Songs website at https://www.happyfriends.ca/
"More Exposed and Less Protected" is an important resource outlining how systemic racism undermines the safety and health of racialized people in the pandemic, ...through inequities in the labour market, the health care system, housing, and many other domains. It integrates a gendered analysis, too. Thank you to Violence Against Women Learning Network! See more
The way we raise boys in our society leads to toxic ideas of what it means to be a man Toxic masculinity is dangerous to individuals of all genders; promoting t...hese limited expressions of what it means to be a man does not allow people to grow into their fullest potential Not only do these harmful understandings of what it is to be a man lead to acts of violence, they causes mental illness in boys and men from being pressured to reach unattainable standards; while women report higher rates of mental illness, men are more likely to die by suicide We must push back against the social messages which teach us genders (and other identity categories) are defined as opposites with strict roles and attitudes; there are more similarities between us than differences Let’s promote a masculinity that supports compassion, allowing men to show empathy and emotions, providing them opportunities to both give and receive support
"Under these conditions, there’s an increased potential for domestic violence to remain behind closed doors and invisible. It’s important to stay in touch with friends and family this winter and be especially vigilant."
