This is so hard for us to write, but our great friend and Supreme Leader has died today. Andys final tour in November was the only way he was ever really goin...g to bow out; with a Stratocaster around his neck, screaming with feedback and deafening the front row. His uncompromising artistic vision and commitment to the cause meant that he was still listening to mixes for the upcoming record, whilst planning the next tour from his hospital bed. But to us, he was our friend - and well remember him for his kindness and generosity, his fearsome intelligence, bad jokes, mad stories and endless cups of Darjeeling tea. He just so happened to be a bit of a genius too. One of the best to ever do it, his influence on guitar music and the creative process was inspiring for us, as well as everyone who worked alongside him and listened to his music. And his albums and production work speak for themselves. Go give em a spin for him... Love you mate. John, Thomas and Tobias GANG OF FOUR

Hey it's Lucas here on the repair bench! Really busy time at the shop these days which is great!. Sometimes it seems like we get a lot of the same type of repair in at the same time. For example we had four Telecaster re-frets in the last week among many other things. I really liked this Telecaster Deluxe. Mid seventies Fender wide-range pickups seem to always make me happy and I definitely played this one longer than I needed to. It's got 1 meg pots too which is interesting.... I'm not one to memorize all vintage guitar facts so that was a surprise to me and it wasn't nearly as bright as I would have thought. This guitar got standard nickel-silver frets to replace the old worn out ones. While truing the neck, I noticed that like a lot of bolt-on necks, this guitar had shifted over time and had a low spot near the 12th fret and a really high spot near the end of the neck. Now all those 15th fret bends won't choke out! It's got a new bone nut and a lot of life to be played. See more

Way to go Caleb on completing your first guitar! Caleb came from Bow River Specialty Woods ( BC) to work and learn over the past few weeks. Hey it's Lucas on the repair bench here. We had a couple Les Paul's here recently that had head stock cracks that had been reset multiple times. We decided to remove as much of the cracked and previously reset material as possible. Obviously this isn't the go-to repair on a simple crack that can be reset but there are some that just have problematic sections in the wood. I started by building a very simple jig that would hold the head stock angle true to the fingerboard whil...e we sliced off a thin layer of the back of the head stock. This jig had to clamp firmly to the neck but also provide a very flat and long surface for the fence on the band saw. After that we used a safe-t-planer on a drill press, and then sanding blocks to make that surface flat and then added a thick piece of mahogany that we could thickness again. This new piece had to be tapered so that when we re-applied the back of the original head stock, it would match the original thickness. Using the tuning peg holes as a reference, we were able to put that original piece back on and then Al put some finish on them to make them look nice! These should be nice and strong now with no worry of previously re-set cracks opening up again!

Hey it's Lucas here on the repair bench. This is a really cool guitar that I got the chance to work on this week. The neck on this guitar had a lot of relief. It was pretty hard to play and the adjustable bridge was bottomed out to try to make it comfortable to play. The problem is that the strings were actually buzzing on the gold foil pickup covers in the process. When I got the neck off I realized that many of the frets were loose and they needed resetting. I used a heat p...ressing method to straighten out the neck and then leveled out the frets. Hard to work without an adjustable truss rod but there are some things you can do! After the neck was dealt with I made a new saddle for the bridge that had a bit more compensation built into it. I was happy to see that when this was all done, I had almost the exact pickup height that I wanted. On these guitars the pickup height is set (although you can just make different pickup risers) so I was happy I didn't have to change that. Blah blah blah guitars are cool. See more

Hey it's Lucas from the repair bench here. A pretty nice Martin D-28 came in a little while ago with a really low saddle and some uneven frets. Even with the high action there were some pretty buzzy spots. The bridge was also lifting and the saddle was located in a way where the intonation was quite sharp. Instead of replacing the bridge which was fine otherwise we decided to fill the saddle slot with ebony of the same grain orientation and rout a new slot behind it. I'm not ...sure if everyone approaches that problem that way but for me it allows the guitar to sound the way it should and not require bridge replacement or moving the bridge further back. Moving the bridge back would expose unfinished soundboard as well as require filling the existing holes in the soundboard and bridge plate so that the ball end of the strings don't pull through the top and into the bridge. After that I reset the neck angle and dressed the frets and made it ready for the world again. I love these projects where multiple actions are taken and each one affects the other. It's always great to string them up after and strum a couple chords and make all this nerdy guitar talk irrelevant. See more

Jonny Guitar.. ox-blood burst w/Filtertron and P90, Bigsby. Flamey on the front , Birdseye maple on the back. All the tones, all the time. It's a great moment when I get to put a custom guitar directly into the hands of the customer who entrusted me to make it. It reminds me why I build -- it's for the people who make the music. #ingoodhands #truesemiacoustic #archtop #newguitarsmell #onthebench #handmadeinwinnipeg

Hey it's Lucas here on the repair bench. This super cool Vox Hurricane came in with the frets nearly down to the tang and a sketchy wiring harness. We put on some new medium frets and then put in all new pots, jack, pickup selector and capacitor. These two single coils did not hum cancel when selected together so we changed that. Seemed like a lost opportunity! I thought this was a pretty cool guitar. Not a lot of "fake" Bigsby tailpieces work very well but this one seemed to bring the strings back to tune when you used it.

Hey it's Lucas here on the repair bench. A while ago we got this really cool Espana "harp" guitar in for some fixing. Someone had converted it to a fretless instrument and the bridge was coming off. The pickup worked but the saddle sits on top of it and was constantly sliding forward so intonation was pretty tricky. We dug out the veneer filled fret slots and fretted it with some medium frets. After the bridge was reset I went about making the pickup/saddle thing workable. I made a rosewood pad that fit the footprint needed to sit in the cradle of the pickup. From there I routed a 1/8" channel in that rosewood piece for the saddle that I made. Now it intonates pretty well and the pickup works!

Lucas here on the repair bench! This 1966 Telecaster came in to the workshop and the owner explained to me that he always wanted an old Telecaster with pinstripes on it. He found this Telecaster which had been refinished and therefore he felt like he wasn't hurting the value of a collectible item. I thought that was pretty cool! It's not what I would do with this guitar but I think it's great when someone makes a guitar their own. I re-fretted this guitar and made a new bone nut for it. When it came in, the neck pickup had been rewound to around 5k and because it's got a pretty high output bridge pickup we decided to overwind the neck pickup to around 10k with 43 gauge wire. Check out the birdseye maple on the neck! It's ready to play again for a long time.

I think its just made me a better player in general, and its opened music up to me, because its something that responds really well to the way that I play, which is pretty rudimentary, Joh K. Samson says. I feel like Al figured out how to make me a guitar I actually wanna play. I think for a long time I didnt really wanna play guitar. It was a means to an end. And I think that since this has come along, I feel a lot more joy in playing, because I feel supported by the instrument.

Lucas here on the repair bench. We recently sent home this cool 50s D-18. It had clearly been around. There was green paint in places and it looked like it had been shot with a shotgun on the top and then had the holes filled with some kind of brown putty. The bridge was split clean in two and the pick guard has shrunk and taken the top and a brace with it. While it kind of needed a neck reset it was decided that we would make a new bridge that was a little shorter. That and... level the frets. Sometimes we have to find a solution that isnt the full job but is going to work for someones family member who just wants to play it. The bridge was made to the same footprint as the original but I opted to keep the saddle shorter in length instead of extending to the wings of the bridge. While I know its not exactly how it would have been done, I made that call because the bridge is thinner than it should be and Im already so used to seeing those bridges split down the saddle line. Its all better now and it sounds great. I think D-18s are the best Dreadnaughts. See more
