Bear Tracks and Trails Bears walk on the soles of their soft feet, so they often do not leave distinct tracks unless they walk through soft mud or snow. Bears have 5 toes on each foot. Their large toe is on the outside of the foot and the small inner toe does not always register.... Footpads are bigger at the outer edges. Front tracks are wider than rear tracks. The small round heel pad of the front foot seldom registers. The rear track is longer because the whole foot, including the heel, registers. They tend to toe-in, especially with their front feet. Often bears travel in an over-step walk, with their rear foot falling in front of where the front foot fell. Where the back foot falls only slightly in front of the front foot, there is a double track, which has led to outlandish reports of track sizes. In deep snow, bears direct-register by placing their rear foot in the same hole created by the front foot. https://bear.org/bear-tracks-and-trails/

Video by @daisygilardini / When your sibling is unwilling to play . . . then it is time to bug mama! Polar bears’ reproductive rate is among the lowest of all ...mammals. Females reach maturity at the age of four- to five-years-old and usually give birth to two cubs. Mortality is high during the cubs’ first year of life, and depends largely on the mother’s health. Cubs will stay with their mother for two and a half to three years. Bears can live anywhere from 20 to 30 years. That means a typical female will have five or six litters during her lifetime, of which two in three cubs will die within their first two years. With such a slow-to-reproduce animal, bad polar bear management could have dramatic consequences on their numbers. Cades Cove the Valley of the Bears.. This is a two part image combined to make one, a view from Hyatt Lane at dusk of the famous tree looking down the beautiful... valley of the cove and a beautiful bear faded over the mountain tops and the valley. Over the past 25 years or so we have been blessed to see and photograph many beautiful bears down in Cades Cove and the Great Smoky Mountains. Bears like Hazel, Charlotte, Mindy, Little J, Big Mama, the Wild Bunch just to name a few, we have watched them raise their cubs and then their cubs raise cubs. We have also seen a few big males like Big Boy and others. We hope you like this image we created. Click on images for full view.. Quote from Bear With US: All life has value and all bears deserve the chance to value life. Remember if you have the joy of seeing a new bear and/or any bear family, watch and photograph them at a safe distance with the correct camera gear and proper high powered, zoom lens as to not disturb, harass and or change their behavior in any way and show them the utmost respect as they are wild animals and we are the visitors in their home. This photo was taken In Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For all the latest updates check out, like and follow our photo page. https://www.facebook.com/JandGPhotos. How monotonous our speaking becomes when we speak only to ourselves! And how insulting to the other beings to foraging black bears and twisted old cypresses ... that no longer sense us talking to them, but only about them, as though they were not present in our worldSmall wonder that rivers and forests no longer compel our focus or our fierce devotion. For we walk about such entities only behind their backs, as though they were not participant in our lives. Yet if we no longer call out to the moon slipping between the clouds, or whisper to the spider setting the silken struts of her web, well, then the numerous powers of this world will no longer address us and if they still try, we will not likely hear them. On the snowy Monday of Nov. 2,2020 7 men drove 3 hours plus to spend the day at Bear With Us working to accelerate the expansion of the Bear With Us Special Care Facility. Ella and I know one of these generous individuals, Mano Krueger who is married to Sherri Cox's sister (www.nationalwildlifecentre.ca). The other men drove this long distance on a cold day just to help little bears. 6 of the men are firemen and one is a retired cardiologist. A whole lot was accomplished including the building of 10 plywood hibernation dens for the cub bears. Thank you Mano Krueger, Donald MacMullen, Jason Raymond, Doug Howder, Patrick Smith, Kevin Reid and Gordon McLaren. Soon we will be accepting more bear cub orphans. Today there is 73 bears at Bear With Us. It takes a community. - Mike and Ella.
