Bolo is an Olde English Bulldogge that came to us with a series of behavioural issues including intraspecies aggression. Throughout the period of 3weeks, we were able to make certain modifications to his general behavior. A dog’s potential range in which it can perform is defined by its genetic make up. Where they fall in that range is contingent on the relative training provided. Meet Stark and Pepper. They are a pair of adult Cane Corsos (Italian mastiffs) that came to our training center for a number of behavioral issues. When I initially spoke to their owner, she expressed that her dogs were very aggressive and difficult to control. She told me that she needed to better manage their behavioural issues so that she could have a more inclusive relationship with her dogs. The Cane Corso was selectively bred to be wary of strangers. So in all fairness..., being territorial is an aspect of the breed’s intrinsic nature. However, these dogs’ reactivity was fuelled by insecurity .. so this had to be addressed. As per usual they were dropped off at the facility and left alone without their owners’ influence. Once outside their comfort zone I saw two very nervous/insecure dogs. However as a team they fed off each other’s energy. So, instead of both dogs working in collusion to undermine my leadership, the plan was to have them work together to fulfill desirable behaviors. My goal wasn’t to change their genetic disposition because that’s an impossible task. My plan was to simply modify certain aspects of their behavioural disposition so that they would be able to better cope with the emotions attached to their reactivity. This would eventually help them to become more socially confident and environmentally sound dogs that their owner can finally enjoy. I engaged both dogs in bonding exercises through which trust could be established. Once trust is earned, rules could be implemented which would then allow me to have teachable moments. If taught properly, the dogs would understand that their behavior has a direct impact on their environment and so better decisions could be made.
