An interesting option for parents looking for a new bike this year for their little. The price point seems good and the bikes have the essentials like hand brakes. I like riser bars for kids and found they helped my kids learn to ride. I haven't seen one in the wild but I think it is worth checking out. Pre-orders open March 1st with bikes expecting to be shipped in April. PARK cycles is located in Sherwood Park AB.

Why would you want a hub drive motor vs mid drive motor on your ebike or ebike conversion? All the shops sell mid drive bikes so they must be "better"? It's a great question and it all comes down to how you will use the bike. Mid drive is great for mountain bikes where weight distribution is important. You also have the added benefit of using the gears for more mechanical advantage (helps with steep climbs you see on the trails). Downside being more wear and tear on the cha...in, cassette, and chainring. These are parts are commonly replaced on a non ebike so having the extra torque from the mid drive motor just increases the wear. Hub drive motors are great for light trail and paved path type riding. The motor, and therefore the weight, is biased towards whichever end of the bike the motor is mounted. The motor is independent of the bikes drivetrain meaning once the sensor picks up your pedal movement, the motor engages and pushes the bike forward. This actually puts less stress on your drivetrain so you have LESS wear and tear. The linked article covers a bit more on the advantages of hub motors. https://ebikes.ca/learn/why-hub-motors-are-awesome.html

A great short clip of a frame builder from over the pond. He puts how I feel into words very eloquently. Bikes are not just for the racer or speed demon but for anyone who wants to open up their world. It’s a bit more challenging with our climate but as someone who used to ride downtown for work 365 days/year, it is doable and very enjoyable. You don’t even really need much specific gear. ... Have a watch.

The bike is officially ready to ride! The bike rides and feels like any other bike, except that I’ve custom fit the bike to me Lots of little things I wish I did differently but am pretty happy overall. Maybe I need to do a v2 The electronic bits from Grin Technologies in BC is as great as I expected. This company was started by a few students from UBC and has grown to where they design and produce their own innovative products.

After converting my own personal commuter bike this season with an ebike kit, I discovered that I LOVE ebikes. There is so much fun and freedom to riding an ebike (whether you are able bodied or have some physical challenges). For me, riding more often also meant carrying more stuff. While I really like the basket on my bike and it is very secure, it also affects the handling because the basket is connected to the handlebar and fork. Ideally, the basket should be attached to ...the frame to not impact handling of the bike (as much). Enter the cycle truck. Large read wheel for speed, small front wheel for strength. Because the front wheel is smaller, the front rack/basket can be attached to the frame but maintain a lower centre of gravity. I didn’t use anything fancy as far as tools go to make this frame. Full size design/drawing to get the angles and tube lengths right, paper templates to make sure the tubes fit nicely against each other. Files and an angle grinder did most of the cutting and finish work (finish work to come). This bike will be converted with a Grin Technologies ebike kit. I’ve added a few bits here and there to make routing the wires neater. I keep all the cables external of the frame though (electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic) because I’ve worked on enough bike to know that while internal routed cables look nice, they can negatively impact shifting and braking, as well as are a pain to work on.

If you’re considering an ebike with a mid drive motor or hub motor, consider this. 10 speed chain for normal bike - $42 10 speed ebike chain - $115... What is one of the most common parts I replace on a bike during service....chains. Add the torque from the motor to your power output and the chain is going to wear FAST. Not to mention the cassette wear. For people who won’t take their bike to mountain bike trails, a hub motor is perfect.
